I'm quite surprised that your manager and head office backed you up, I would have expected them to kowtow to those SC's and discipline you for daring to follow the law and ask for ID!

That comic strip reminds a lot of The Perry Bible Fellowship. It has the same kind of sick jokes.

The next time someone gets the race card pulled on them, I would love to see them respond, "I wouldn't know. I'm color blind."

          A question for the cashiers...
If a 30 year old, with ID, had their 5 year old child with them, would you refuse the sale? If you didn't refuse them, and the "I don't have an ID, he does" was next in line, I could see a major case of SC on the way.

          Just curious...
I think in that case, it's generally at the employee's discretion. I can't say for sure, but I've seen parents toddle up to the smoke counter, kids age 5 or so with them, and ask for cigarettes. (We do Challenge 25 as well) While we generally ask for ID across the board if there's groups, we do use some discretion with children around the 6/7 mark.

Although then again, what kind of parent gives their kids cigarettes/alcohol on a daily basis? (I'm not above letting the kid have a sip of the beer from time to time)
