  • Asshat in the Food Court

So I was in the queue at the burger place in the food court of my local shopping centre. Evidently the burger place and the fish place next door are owned by the same franchisee, and they share one credit card system (although they each have their own card swipe machines). Apparently the fish place's card machine was broken, so one of the cashiers from the fish place was using the burger place's machine to make a transaction. So the guy in front of me asks a question about one of the meal offers. The conversation goes like this:

SC: the guy in front of me
    BPC: burger place cashier
    FPC: fish place cashier

SC: So what drink can I get with the #2 combo? [I don't remember his actual question, but it was something like that.]
BPC: You can have a Coke or...
SC: [cutting her off] I wasn't asking you, I was asking her. [pointing at FPC]
FPC: I'm sorry, I actually work next door so I don't know the answer to that.
BPC: But I'd be happy to answer your question.
SC: [to FPC] You're standing behind the counter here, you should be able to tell me.
FPC: Well, I'm just here to run a credit card through the machine. I don't actually work here.
SC: Well you shouldn't be behind the counter if you're not willing to work. [yes, he really said that ]
BPC: Look, sir, I'm here and I'm able to answer your questions and take your order.
SC: But she's here and she ought to answer me... [this goes on for a few more rounds, until FPC has finished with the card machine and walks away]
SC: [to BPC] Hmph. You people really ought to be better trained. [he gives his order]

Gaaah. And it's not as if there was really any room for confusion in the first place; the workers wear completely different uniforms, with the logos quite prominently displayed.

Unless the two store fronts were operating together as a single establishment with one set of books, then that will SERIOUSLY screw up the accounting for BOTH places.

Oh, and that guy was a blazing asshole.

I think they are operating together. I just looked it up on the internet, and the two brands are actually owned by the same company. I guess that the same franchisee runs both of the stores as part of a single deal. I don't have my credit card slip from there any more, but IIRC it actually had both stores' names at the top (which is why I said in the OP that they shared the credit card processing system).

It sounds like something like that. My company sort of has the same thing and we can even punch our time cards at the other store.

Not really, if they kept track of which CC transactions were for the OTHER store, and made sure to get the receipts then it's just bookeeping and probably a funds transaction (with relevant taxes and fees) from one account/book to the other at the end of the day.

                    Extra work absolutely.

Yeah, but if you have any idea of what you're doing, it's really only a matter of a couple of entries in your accounting system.
