In the used bookstore of this story, there is a little section near the counter where you drop off your books to be either accepted or rejected that resembles a cubby hole case. There's at least 25 cubby holes. The books that are rejected are put in a cubby hole with a sticker that has the patron's box number (the box used to put the books in to be sorted). That way the patron knows which books were rejected. The patron has the end of business day to claim those books.
I've seen these books - they aren't bad. The titles might be something no one is looking for, or whatever. The library I used to work at had a couple of towers where there were read-and-returns which meant that the books didn't have to be checked out, just take them and return them whenever you're done. The ones that were really really nice-looking were given to the Friends of the Library to sell and make extra $$ for the library.
I am always for donating to either libraries, homeless shelters, etc. before resorting to the destruction of the books.
