On the Delivery trucks. I know of several locations where thsi is simply no good receiving area. Several of them are old buildigns that were never designed for their current use.

Small trucks and panel vans, that a small delivery may come on have room in back, but larger trucks such as tractors pulling 40-50 ft trailers have no choice but to park in the fire lane to unload as their is a sharp 90 degree turn to the back surrounded 4-6 ft high concrete wall.

There is this Subway that is across from the hospital I used to work at. They have a screwy parking situation. There are about 3 regular spaces and one handicap space in front of it. On either side of the building is a single lane to get to a larger lot in the back. The handicap white diagonal lines (which is to give handicap people space to load/unload - it is NOT meant for parking) is next to one of the single lanes.

On more than one occasion people parked in the handicap spot because it was the only one open in front. I always gave them dirty looks and I told management of the store that they should do something about it. They always said that they couldn't do anything more than post a sign. If they called the cops, the person would be long gone before the cops arrive. So I tell them, if they don't serve the customers than either a) they will just leave or b) it will give the cops enough time to show up. Apparently Subway values cash more than the handicapped.

One day some jerk parked in the diagonal lines. He blocked the entrance into the back parking lot! So in order to get in I had to enter through the exit and hope to god that no one was trying to leave. It was a very dangerous situation. I was SO mad. The jerk came out as I approached the door and I told him off. He was a typical jerk and told me to mind my own business - but hey, if you impede my ability to drive, then it IS my business. I went in, and customers were cheering - they all had been impeded by the jerk too. I walked right up to the manager and told him that if he had any decency, he would refuse to serve anyone who parked illegally in the handicap space or the diagonal space, and if he wouldn't, then I would never visit his restaurant again.

How did it turn out? To this day, I have never been back there. Some people never learn.

I know there are a couple of people in our region who basically crusade against people who illegally park in handicapped spots. They take photos of their cars, of the drivers, and get them ticketed. There was a football star who was ticketed about a year ago because of one of the crusaders. I figure it's only a matter of time before someone sees the delivery trucks covering the handicapped spot and raises cain. I can see them using the yellow line portion of the street, but when they infringe on the handicapped space (which they do, regularly. ) then I take offense.
Me and some of my friends have done that. We're all quite large guys - long hair or shaved heads, tattoos, metal band t-shirts etc (you get the jist). One day we saw some guy wearing flash suit pull his big 4x4 into a handicap spot, leap out and run into a store. So we stood. And waited. 5 minutes later he comes out (alone) and goes to climb into his car. Until we ask where his handicap card is. His response? 'I don't f**king have one do i!' Biggest guy steps forward, cracks his knuckles and asks 'Want one?'

        Guy drove off fairly quickly...

90% of the trucks who deliver foodstuffs to the convenience store consistently park in the metered spots without paying the meters, the handicapped spot and have never been ticketed
what happens if there's someone in a wheelchair parked in that handicapped spot when they pull up to do their delieveries?

I apologize, I may not have been clear. This is the easiest way to illustrate:

              \________________________|_________|__________|___________

The yellow line basically stretches along the half of the block up to the corner. Then there's the handicapped spot in blue and the black lines are regular metered parking. The convenience store is basically located right behind where the two metered spaces are there.

If someone's parked in the handicapped space, the delivery truck just parks further into the yellow line area, which means the guy has to walk an additional 20 feet with each handcart full of goodies.

But, regularly, delivery trucks park in the handicapped spot (as recently as yesterday afternoon) so the delivery guy doesn't have to walk the extra 20 feet. So if someone comes along who actually needs the handicapped spot, it's got a Mack Semi sitting in it.

Sadly, I have never seen a cop say anything to a truck parked there in my 5-year tenure. I suppose if someone lodged a complaint they would do something about it but like I said - I don't want to make trouble for the store in which I work.
