One that still scares me to this day is The Birds. Everytime I see a flock of them sitting on a powerline, I start driving a little faster.

Hitchcock is an example of "scary" done right, IMO.

Quite unlike a lot of horror movies I've seen trailers for, in the past decade or so (yeah, I know, never trust a trailer). Dammit, I want to be on the edge of my seat because I'm about to get the pants scared off of me (quite figuratively, thank you ), not because I want a head start on a run to the toilet so I don't on someone.

I mean, gore can have its place, but when the main point of the movie seems to be "how nasty can we make this?" that doesn't make a movie scary, it makes it shoot to the top of my DO NOT WANT list.
