I see, there does need to be a balance. It's just that I've seen too many parents take it to the point where they are only there to punish their kids and act as if they resent them.

Mine were more on the "Friend" side, but weren't afraid to let me have it.
The problem is actually that the parent wants the child to "like" them more than respect them. But I think if I continued I'd be better off on Fratching, so I'll just head over that way.

and sometimes those spoiled brats go on to college.
i posted about one of them before, how he would raise his voice to the teacher. until the day the teacher had enough of him disrupting the class. not sure what she shouted at him but the next day when he was in class he was quiet and he did a lot of his labwork somewhere else

Wow. If I said any of that stuff in front of my mother NOW she'd kick my ass, and I'm turning 22 in a couple of weeks.
Ditto, and I'm 30. I still NEVER swear in front of my parents. Had I acted like that little bitch had done, my mum would have killed me. O_o Hopefully she'll act that way to the wrong person one day and get the everlasting snot kicked out of her.

I've got no business commenting on parenting in this case, as I'm unfit to care for goldfish, much less raise another human being.

But I DO want to say that I shudder to think how much money is being wasted on this. Education outside of the basic 12 grades is NOT cheap, and you only get a shot at taking those 12 grades free ONCE, and then you get to pay.

She may see it as a nuisance now, but once her college fund is pissed away, and that girl is in her 30's, still working as a checkout cashier and hating her life, she's going to regret all this. She might still be stuck in the distorted, self-centered view she seems to have, so she might not ADMIT it, even to herself... but it's such a huge waste of an opportunity that will never come again.

That teacher is exactly right. For education to do any good, the one being educated must want to learn, and be TEACHABLE.

Has that girl been checked for learning disabilities? Maybe she isn't doing the work because she can't but is too embarrassed to admit it and the swearing is all out of frustration?

I'm 30, and I'm working in a petrol station. It's got nothing to do with not going to college (I have three A-Levels and an NVQ) and everything to do with the fact that a) we have a recession and b) it's not a terrible job and I do actually like it lots. Just putting that out there.

Also, if this girl is that rude to people who dare to tell her little precious self to do things she doesn't want to do, I really don't see her in any kind of job at all. I see her sitting in a trailer, with four bratty kids running around, watching Jerry Springer on a rented TV. And wishing she hadn't been such a bitch and wasted her education.

It isn't even necessarily that she's embarassed to admit that she can't do it, it might be a learning disability that makes it difficult for her to concentrate, or makes it difficult to explain concepts that she actually does understand. It took me until I was in my twenties, and my now-husband telling me that most people don't have to work so hard on X that I realised that I was unusual. She might just think that everyone has a hard time, for example, doing up technical specs, and that the teacher assigned far too much work, not realising that she just can't do them as well as everyone else.

That could be one reason, as it's somethinig I have that makes college assignments take twice as long as they should, but that doesn't excuse swearing at the teacher.

I don't think she'd even do that much. Some people just refuse to admit they've ever been wrong or acted badly.

As for learning disability, that is a possibility, and a good specialist can diagnose that. Problem is, Mommie Doormat has to admit there is a problem and take steps to solve it. Doesn't look like she's willing to admit her Darling Precious Little Angel is out of line...
I don't have an attitude problem. You have a perception problem.

I'm just saying she might not be swearing because she's a brat, she's just so frustrated and immature (we don't know the age) to handle it properly. Although there is also the chance she is just a brat

No, it smells to me as though she's just a brat. Parenting as ineffective as was displayed just there will cause that, unless the child is born with an exceptional level of built-in moral fibre.
