    DMV Sighting (short)

    The DMV in my state only takes cash, checks and money orders. Every DMV I've been to has had multiple, very visible signs stating this.

    Guy ahead of me in line: "Why is this line moving so slowly? People need to have their act together when they come here and not waste everyone's time!" Blargle Blargle Whine Complain Moan

    Guy finally gets to the counter, and gets told he can't pay with his credit card. Instead of accepting reality, he spends 5 minutes complaining about not being able to use his credit card. Way to hold up the line!

    I've never been in a DMV (multiple states) that accepts credit. It would be against their interest to accept credit. At least debit is immediate and Im surprised they accept that.

    I just take cash.

      Jackass. As if complaining about it right then and there was going to make a card machine magically appear. ESPECIALLY at a DMV, who are notorious for doing whatever is LEAST convenient to the public.

      My DMV doesn't take credit either. Like Whiskey said, why should they? Most places take credit as a convenience to the customer, and a DMV has no motivation to want to please the 'customer'.

      I believe the term I'm thinking of is 'captive audience'.

      Oh, and my DMV bastards cash the checks FAST. They must be done electronically or something, because every time I write one, its out of my account the very next morning. Bastards.

        To be fair, the DMV exists to generally make you life miserable, and I wouldn't put it past them to tell you one thing and change their story 2 minutes alter.

          Most government agencies here don't take credit...it's cash or check. Once, I made it all the way to the DMV, then realized DUH! and had to drive back home to get my checkbook (I don't normally carry it on me).

          Though interestingly, I CAN order a driving abstract/pay my tabs with my credit card online, but I can't if I go directly to the DMV/licensing office. Of course, I have to pay an extra processing fee online...can't expect them to absorb the fees, now can we?

            Wisconsin DMV makes a point of putting ATMs in all their offices for exactly this reason. The ATMs are owned by a bank that makes a small profit off withdrawal fees. Simple, yet effective.

              My experience with most government agencies (especially state) is that if they take credit cards, they charge you extra to cover the credit card fees. The only government agency I've used a credit card with is the US Patent Office, and for some reason they don't charge extra for it.

                    o.O I didn't know some DMVs didn't take credit. Even the smaller one I went to took credit. But they were awesome and quick anyways. I'll have to remember that next time I go to the DMV, juuuust in case.

                      I don't get people who complain about the wait at the DMV. It's the DMV. You KNOW there will be a long wait.

                      Last time I went (register my car), I brought my iPod with some old radio shows on it. Funny shows. People were confused by my smiling. *snicker*

                        I got nailed by the whole no credit or debit thing a while back (http://www.customerssuck.com/board/s...ad.php?t=62636), but it was my own forgetfullness, so I didn't BMG. I actually got great service, all things considered.

                        Our DMV is split into two offices: one run by the state for licenses and driving tests, and other for title and plates. The latter is sub-contracted out, and they have an ATM on site for the forgetful minded among us
                        They say that God only gives us what we can handle. Apparently, God thinks I'm a bad ass.

                          The DMV that I've worked in did take credit cards, would take everything but Amex and Dinners so naturally the customers would demand to use those cards which was great since no other government agency would take those cards either.

                            Amusing story. When I went to the DMV to switch from a New Jersey driver's license to a Wisconsin one, I got called up before I finished the paperwork.

                              It's a tax. Why would they spend money out of their pockets on credit card fees to make your taxpaying easier for you?
