  • A quick story from one of my customers

OK, not technically a sighting, but happened to him anyway. Apparently, they sold this man a bin and he wanted to return it, and he said the conversation went something like this:

    Man: Can I help you?

SC: Yes, I want to return this bin, it has a 15 year guarantee on it.

Man: Yes, it does, may I see your receipt please.

    SC: Of course.

The receipt was 14 years, 364 days old! This man had saved his receipt on purpose and then returned the bin for a refund ONE DAY before the guarantee ran out. The bin wasn't defective, he just wanted his money back. My customer had no choice but to honour the guarantee and give him his refund.

Doesn't a guarantee imply there has to be something wrong with the item before it can be returned?

I think from what the customer said that the guarantee was that you could change your mind about the product and fetch it back within a 15 year period and you would get a refund, but I may be wrong.

A bin as in a trash bin?
Why would a manufacturer even put a 15-year guarantee on something like that?

Well, seeing as to how inflations gone on since then...

....lets just hope his refund was like $3.99.

That's what I'm thinking, and wouldn't the item just be exchanged not refunded?

I have had 2-3 incidents where a customer tried to return a car/truck battery cause they wanted their money back, and they using the 'warranty' as a reason. The thing is though it is a 'replacement warranty' not a guarantee, meaning if it is a bad battery we replace it for them or if it is under the prorated we sell them a new one under a prorated adjustment. Doesn't mean they get their money back.

But if he kept the receipt that long and it says on it that he can bring it back within 15 years. . . guess have to honor it. Makes me wonder if this guy was counting the days till he could get his few bucks back

              not to mention.... inflation.

say he bought the bin for $5 15 years ago.
so he might get the full $5 back but... it won't buy as much as it did back then.

So in a way he's not really gaining back as much as he thinks he is.

I was thinking the same thing. His $5 bin now costs $12.

Because it looks nice and no one will ever think about having it honoured after such a long period so it doesn't cost anything. Oh, wait.

my friend works at a store that has a lifetime warrenty. She said she had a guy that bought back a tool that was from the 50's. They had to give him a new one.

Craftsman tools have lifetime warranties. When my dad was in basic training (this would've been back in the 60s - early 70s), they were cleaning up some destroyed cars in the bombing range. In the trunk of one of the cars was a beat-up, rusty, partly blow-up set of Craftsman tools. The guy working with my dad took the bag to Sears, and got a set of brand-new tools to replace them.
