  • No Dessert for Me

Last night it was another dinner out night. It's not good for the "saving to buy a house" fund, but I've been feeling like crap of late, and it's been really good for both our psyches to eat out a bunch this last week.

This was another night at the local seafood chain, which we visit often enough that the hostess last time commented about recognizing me.

We get the booth next to the kitchen entrance, which is a bit odd, as it is serviced by a different waitperson than the rest of the booths on that side of the room, so it tends to get a little worse service than likely the rest of the house. Which is fine by us, as we're incredibly low maintenance diners.

The waitress started out great. We thought we knew what we wanted right away, but there was a new menu option that we hadn't spotted that was actually perfect for us last night, so we went with that.

Unfortunately, that was the only really good thing she did other than refilling our drinks without either of us needing to ask.

She cleared plates just fine. A little too well, actually, as she cleared one plate I wasn't actually finished with. The fact that it was on the other side of the rest of my dishes should have been some sort of clue, considering everything we had actually finished with was lined up at the edge of the table.

The boyfriend finishes his entree and we're chatting, and I've still got a good portion of my own to go, which I plan on finishing while there. It seems the waitress, however, had other ideas. Completely unbidden, she comes over and leaves the check, asking if I want a box for what's left of my food.

She didn't ask if we were done. She didn't ask if we wanted dessert. And, to add insult to injury, she then didn't come back by for another five minutes (which gave me more than enough time to actually finish my entree).

If I'd been thinking straight, I'd have had a word with the manager. I might still do so after work tonight. Not offering dessert at the end of the meal and leaving the check before it's requested is totally uncool.

Yeah, I'd say that's sucky. And rude.

Time for the infamous "two-penny tip" I would think. Taking a plate without even asking if you were done? DING. Bringing your check without asking if you were ready for it, which btw you obviously weren't? Double-DING. Not trying to upsell you on desert? (Yes, that's an upsell, not unlike "would you like fries with that?") Final DING.

Three DINGs and she's out. Out of a tip. No, better yet, leave two pennies -- that way she can't say to herself "they just forgot to leave a tip."

Yes, servers in this country rely on tips to make ends meet. But they had better damned well earn it, too. It's a GRATUITY for extra-good service, and not a HIDDEN FEE!

It sounds like she was trying to rush you along...maybe her shift was ending soon.

It's happened to me a few times that the waiter doesn't ask if I want dessert, just brings the check toward the end of dinner. I just say I planned on having dessert, and they print another check.

if I were that waitress I would have gone for the sale as i WANT that tip. I don't care if I get over time unless the boss is going nuts over no overtime.

Guess she really didn't either want to make the sale in hopes of earning that tip but then her previous actions may have skewed it already.

              We went with about 10%.

And I totally forgot to call them last night. >_<

It drives me nuts when dessert isn't offered; I mean, I thought they were supposed to ask, since it's one more thing they can sell. The being rushed part bothers me too.

10% was very generous after the service offered (imo). Probably more then I personally would have left.
