  • Trash at Applebees

Last year, one of the guys that I worked with moved to Texas with his boyfriend. Before they moved, we had a going away party at the local Applebees. So we are sitting at this huge table, and are all laughing and talking and having a great time. Then we hear voices behind us, which get louder and louder, eventually ending with a guy sitting behind us screaming at the manager that he was a "f@g", and leaving the restaurant, and the manager threatening to call security and chasing them out of the restaurant. We were shocked, since we had no clue what had just happened.

It was a good thing that we all eat and drink there all the time, because the manager came up and filled us in on the story.

Turns out that this man and woman come into the restaurant and sit in the bar section with their young daughter. They order drinks and get carded. Well, then another couple comes in and sits at the table next to them. They also order drinks, but don't get carded. This got table one angry. They called the manager over, and said that it was just because they were black that they were carded, and that it was stupid that table two (who were white) weren't carded. The manager tried explaining that the couple at table two were regulars, and that since they came in all the time, all the servers knew and recognized them, and hence, didn't card them. This wasn't good enough for table one, and they start screaming at the manager about how he is racist and a f@g. The manager grabs their bill and puts it on the table, and advises them to leave before mall security or the cops are called. He then leaves to let them pay their bill. I guess the guy at table one was still angry, because he threw his money at the manger...coins and all. They then get up and leave before the cops are called. The manager had to chase after them, though, because they had forgotten to grab their daughters coat...and it was cold out.

I dunno...for me personally, I enjoy being carded.

I'm 21 and the only place I don't get carded is our government-run liquor stores.

OK, I'm 31 and I still get carded. Now, I'm not gonna complain about it :bats eyelashes:... but since I know I look young I'm always prepared to pull out my ID. If they don't, great, and if they do, well, they're just doing their job. sheesh

I'd have watched him run after the jerks and thought, "There goes a great man..."

Being in my 30's I love getting carded. I hope that I will be carded for many years to come and if not I'll take full and utter enjoyment now- just in case.

My dad got carded till he was 30.

I have a friend who's 20 and she's less likely to get carded than I am. I'm not sure how I feel about that.

I'm racking my brain trying to remember the last time I was carded for either smokes or alcohol, which right now I can't remember.

Maybe it's an advantage to working in grocery stores for so many years - the coworkers get used to you and don't think about it.

                  mmmm

I get carded everywhere....I'm 22 and people always ask me what grade I'm in or what high school I go to..hehhehe
                  Then pause when I tell them I'm in grade 16 ><;
They've stoped asking me for my card since I take it out and put it on the table before they even start to take my drink order....

I'm 19 and I usually get carded going into clubs, even though I look my age when I'm all done up. Wearing no make-up & looking younger than my brother (he's 15), I never get carded at bottle shops. Ever. It's strange.

I usually don't mind getting carded, since I generally carry my driving license with me. Only place I've ever had a real problem was a family trip to the states.

At the airport bar, all of us were carded. Literally, we had to hand over all of our passports to prove that the person buying five beers, was buying them for five people who were over 21. They then said that we shouldn't sit at the same table as my sister (20) because she was underage and couldn't drink. That was irritating.

Anyway, once we actually got to our hotel I went off down to the casino to explore and visit the bar. I order my drink, they ask for my ID. At the moment this is all fine. I hand over my ID, my British driving license.

"I'm sorry, I can't accept this. I need something issued by a government."

Wait a second...the hotel has my passport in their safe, so I can't use that. The only other ID I've got is my driving license, which has my date of birth on it and is issued by the British government, and is harder to forge than the average American passport let alone license, and they won't accept it?

That's the only time I've ever kicked up a fuss about being carded. Normally its just not worth the effort.

Did you point out to them that Great Britain is in fact a government?

I get carded about half the time I expect to be carded. Some places card me, others don't.

I got carded buying an "R" rated movie at the grocery store. I'm 36 years old, so I was flattered. My oldest son was when he heard the cashier ask for my ID.

Not that I'm getting into the race issue, but isn't this like the incident that happened at Denny's a few years back? Can't remember the details, but it was another issue of "because we're black" that they felt they were not getting the proper service.

It's almost like the issue in South Florida with the retirees and snowbirds. Many of these "patrons", if you can call them that, go out and plan on complaining enough to get a free meal, all because "they're old", or "they're not native to Florida" or what have you. Many restaurants' managers and owners have become so fed up with it that they almost never provide a free meal to these people.

Sounds like that's what you had here. A couple trying to get a free meal, and looking for some lame excuse to get it.
