  • Green hair and Jesus lovers...

This is a story my best friend in college told me. I thought I'd post it here.

She was a punk in high school in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Not exactly a hot-bed of punk intrigue. There were others about, but not many. And my friend kept her hair short and loved to dye it funky colors.

One time she walked into a grocery store and a small child spotted her and in all innocence announced to her Mother "Mommy, that lady's hair is green!"

She says this woman looked over at her, scowled ferociously, grabbed the kid's arm and snarled "That's what happens when you don't love Jesus!" Then stalked off, dragging the child with her.

No Christian bashing intended. Although to be honest, I wouldn't consider someone like this to be a 'real' Christian anyway. My friend said she felt bad for the kid, having such an angry woman for a Mother.
Because as we all know, on the Internet all men are men, all women are men and all children are FBI agents.

Wow, I love people like that. Something tells me that Jesus would not give a rat's behind what color hair people had.

I would laugh so hard if your friend is a Christian as well.

A while back at a small group meeting, we were having a discussion on prayer (I think I've told this story before, but it fits). One very odd girl said she "prayed all the time for people who dyed their hair and wore black all the time because they need Him more than anybody." My friend at the time was wearing a youth ministry t-shirt and underneath it . . . a black longsleeved fishnet top and baggy black pants. She just kinda gave her a look, and stupid girl just turned bright red.

A bunch of us dressed gothic for church the next week. What? It was Halloween!

Frighteningly enough, this girl is getting married soon. *shudder* In a word, Bridezilla . . .

A good movie about this sort of thing is "SLC Punk"...it has Matthew Lillard in it, pretty much a "B" movie but worth a watch all the same. Actually I think the main character had green hair too...

I spent the night in Cheyenne once...I would be more concerned about the poverty level and drug abuse that appeared to be rampant in that area then someone with green hair if I lived there.

Grrrrrr. I hate people like that. They are not real Christians. Several co-workers and I sometimes discuss the bible and other things when we are on break. Quite a nice conversation, even if we disagree.

A REAL Christian undersands that we all must make our own decisions and let others make theirs. Of course we have every right to not like their decision and we can even not talk to them if we REALLY don't like it. But you don't degrade people like that.

God welcomes everyone back if they truely wish to return. As long as that person is not causing me harm or destroying/stealing my property you should let them do as they wish. I may not like and be extremely offended by it, but go do what you want and leave me out of it.

Just a small reminder not to turn this into a debate of what constitutes a 'Christian'.

It's been civil so far. Let's keep it that way.
              Thanks.

Will we find her story in the next update over at Etiquette Hell?

My mom was doing charity gift wrapping for Christmas at my store a few years ago. I was on register but when I'd get a minute I'd go over to the gift wrap table to chat. She pointed out some girl who had asked her if she knew where the magazine "Weird NJ" would be. The girl's hair was cut in a cute bob style, dyed jet black with bright blue highlights and she was wearing black with fishnets and big 5 inch platform boots.... My mom had never heard of the magazine and the girl found an employee to help her. I showed the mag to my mom and she spent the rest of her wrapping shift flipping through it between customers.

Reminds me of my family. The ones I don't talk to-for that very reason. It's a shame that there's still so much stereotyping everywhere.

I've said it before, and I'll probably say it again, I love surprising people. When I was in college, before I got my corporate job, I was a big fan of oddly colored hair (my fave was bright purple) and punk/hardcore/metal style (including lots of black, torn denim and leather). I used to love the way people reacted when "scary looking me" held the door, said please and thank you, and tipped well. I still get odd looks when I'm dressed up with all the piercings in for a show.

Hey, it takes all kinds. Some people still don't get it that you can't tell a book by its cover, nor a person by their style.

some of our best customers work at tattoo parlors and ride motorcycles; the types that 'normal' people consider freaks (they're also the most polite ).

it's not the package, after all, but what's inside that counts; most people seem to forget that.
                      look! it's ghengis khan!

I love having brightly colored hair. I've done everything -- black, blue-black, red, red streaks, red streaks with bright gold highlights (one of my favorites), several different shades of purple, blue, multicolored, blue with the underside shaved and dyed bright magenta...

The craziest thing is that where I work, the people most likely to stop me and compliment me on my hair color are the little old ladies. They love it! The young and hip rarely say a word. When it was a brighter color, little girls (like six - eight years) would stop me in the street to tell me that I had pretty hair.

Sadly, I don't have the money to get it done anymore. It's expensive to get long hair dyed at a good salon, and I won't trust anyone else, including myself, anywhere near my hair with bleach. Once the current color grows out all the way, I'll be stuck with my ordinary boring color for a long while.

I used to have my hair dyed red and highlighted, nothing that wouldn't occur in nature, but I was a redhead for a brief time as a child and I have very fair skin so it worked well. I let it grow out only because it requires so much upkeep and it's too expensive. I've done it myself a few times but it's so messy....bleh...guess I'll just hafta be a boring brunette.

I have an impressive collection of hairpieces I like to wear (and before you ask, yes, the hair I am wearing in my photo is my real, factory-issue hair.). I wear them when I wear my hair up, because I really am not very good at "doing" hair. It's easier to make a standard bun, then pin on a fancy hairpiece to make it look like I did something neat with it.

The hairpieces I wore when I worked at Kinko's had colored streaks in them. So I could wear this cool, poufy bun with sprouts of blue, or green, or purple, or pink (whatever my mood) mixed in with the dark brown. I also had one that was all natural color and braided into dozens of little spikey braids, each tipped with a neon-colored rubber band. This I would hold on with neon colored pencils (as hair sticks) for a truly colorful display. I had pieces that had long fans of powder pink or neon purple strands splaying out from them that I wore over ponytails.

It got pretty crazy. But not once did anyone ever say anything negative about my weird hair. They'd come in, see blue streaks, and go "Uh, wasn't your hair purple yesterday?" When they found it was false hair, they were amazed and dug it, more than anything else.

I've worn these things to church. I fail to understand why Jesus would hate funky hair. I guess they looked tame, compared to some of my other co-workers:

White-haired lady that drove delivery used to dye hers completely bright pink or purple, depending on mood.

Straight-edge punk with jet black spiked mohawk

One guy with half head shaved bald, with dragon tatooed on scalp (and the only person that complained about this guy was some really incompetent mystery shopper.)

I remember this one time, when I didn't love Jesus, and I woke up and my hair was purple and I had my nose pierced.
