Freecycle is a group on Yahoo where if you have some unwanted items that you no longer want but think they are too good to throw away, you can give them away.. You can also ask for things, the unspoken rule that they being things that people might have lying around.

I see posts all the time people asking for:

    Money
    Prescription drugs (Painkillers, mostly)
Brand new items (New cars, new TV's, new game systems)
People waiting until they are due to give birth in a few days and asking for every single baby item (Seriously.. They had at least 7 months to get it themselves or to ask sooner)
People who are just now trying to get pregnant asking for baby items (You aren't even pregnant yet.. Plus, if you have to ask a 2nd hand group for baby items, maybe now id not the time for you to even be trying)
People asking for Christmas help.. (I know times are tough, but no one has a brand new Christmas just lying around to give away.. there are many other programs that can help with that and Freecycle is not one of them.. Plus waiting untill 2 days before Christmas is a really bad idea)

There are people who will post a want and say they "Desperately need" said item.. You do not "desperately need" a dining table, cat toys or a dishwasher. Needs and wants are 2 very different things.

When I post an offer, I post a bunch at once.. I have rules. People get mad at my rules, I mean it's my stuff, if I just want it to go to retarded monkies, it's my perogative.

    My rules:

You must come to me to pick up item, I will not bring it or meet you anywhere. Since I am posting several items, please only ask for one. Do not give me your number, I will not call you. If you ask for several items or use multiple emails to ask for several items, I will ignore you. If you do not pick up an item (I don't care the reason) you will never be able to get an item from me again.

I got into an arguement the other day, I posted a bunch of things among them being 3 nearly new bottle of OPI nail polish, large bag of plus sized clothes, 2 well worn pairs of New Balance shoes and 2 pairs of maternity pants that are too short for me.

A lady asked for all of those items.. So I just ignored her, or at least I tried to, she sent several emails saying she didn't know if I had gotten her last emails, but she and 2 of her teen daughters are plus sized. After the 5th email, I told her that I was ignoring her per my rules. She hits me with "When I post stuff, I just want it gone and I give it away to whoever wants it.. I've had a house fire and I could use those items"

Ok, many things wrong with that.. I have never seen her even post any offers, according to her previous want posts, she lives in a fire trap mobile home that she cannot heat due to lack of funds to purchase heaters, she has 3 teenagers that she can't afford things for and the only time they have heat is when the water heater catches fire..

I told her that she can give her stuff away her way and I will give my stuff away my way. P.S. Guilt trips don't work on me.

She tries to hit me with the rule that you can only post one post per week (That is, you can only post one WANTED post per week, when giving stuff away you can post as many as you like) I insulted her reading skills and told her to try harder.

People not picking up stuff that they have asked for that I posted.. I put my location on the offer post and not a real general on, I put that I am a 1/2 a mile away from a local hospital. I get "Oh, you're too far away" "I was 1/2 way there when I got the word that my cousin died" "I live 2 hours away" (Really? This Freecycle group is specific to my town)

When something I offer is picked up, I post that it has been picked up. People do not read, I posted a carpet cleaner that I just did not use, I could've easily have sold it.. But I thought I'd be nice. I must've posted a Taken post 5 times.

Oh, if you can afford an IPhone, you can afford your own Goddamned nail polish.. Don't sit there and say you can't afford a 2 dollar bottle of nail polish.

Oh, and this gem.. People asking me if I still have something and when I tell them that I don't.. They ask me to get it back from whoever got it, as they need it more.

OH FFS! When I use Freecycle I go to who ever has it, as you know I want it. If I have stuff to give away I expect them to come to me. Its simple. If something is taken it's taken I didn't get to the giver in time, oh well.

Jeeez, every time I think I've heard everything, they go and change the definition of "everything" ... as in "everything stupid." Wow.

Our local freecycle banned people from requesting or giving away prescription medicine. They also had to ban people from asking for basic hygiene supplies such as toilet paper, because too many people were requesting that very basic kind of stuff and the moderators felt it wasn't up to the group to provide other people with basic necessities. You could still offer that type of stuff, just not request it.

Like you I dislike the people who wait right before their due date, then ask for everything the baby needs. I also don't like the people who basically ecpect freecycle to furnish their entire house and ask for everything but the kitchen sink.

I wish I knew about this site when I replaced my TV recently. I donated it to a thrift store which I guess is just as good.

I may have missed it, but why did you ignore the lady the first time she e-mailed?

I ignored her because she asked for more than one thing I was offering.

I assume it's because the lady asked for all of the items instead of just one as the OP requested in her rules.

I hate it when people expect you to do X Y and Z when they are getting something FOR FREE!!! Its almost like it brings out the worst EWs.

Fortunately I've not had any issues with my town's Freecycle - I've given away a lot of stuff for my brother (kids toys and clothing) and managed to get a high chair and playpen for my Mom's house when his kids were born (which were then freecycled back to other people who needed them as Mom takes very good care of her stuff)
The large print giveth, and the small print taketh away.

I was looking for a television on Freecycle for a while (I don't watch enough TV to justify paying for one, so figured I'd take one off someone else's hands who didn't want it), but they all ended up being scammers. :\

Wow, that sucks. I don't use it anymore, but I used to have a really good experience with Freecycle. Maybe because I didn't give away anything of a whole ton of value. Just old magazines and books. Stuff I couldn't really do anything with except throw away.

I always hated all the WANT posts though. I just didn't see the point in them. If someone has something to give away they will post it. Why can't they just read the posts to see if what they need is posted? IMO people aren't going to give away something or buy it for you just because they see your post that you want it.

Now I just give away all my stuff to the thrift store. So much faster and the thrift store RARELY sends me stuff begging for all their wants.

I've almost given up on Freecycle. More than once I've sat in a parking lot waiting to meet someone to GIVE them stuff, only to be stood up. I don't usually like people coming to my home; I don't know those people, how do I know they're not casing the place?

But I've always been amused at what people ask for vs. what people offer.

WANTED: I need a car must be dependable

OFFER: bag of old socks, some mismatched

WANTED: Crib, new or in good condition.

OFFER: 3 coupons for 20% off baby formula

WANTED: Dishwasher, preferably white or stainless steel

OFFER: half empty box of tea bags

Okay, not actual Freecycle posts, but not far from the truth.
Women can do anything men can.
But we don't because lots of it's disgusting.

Actually, the wanted posts are great if you want something that a lot of people just throw out, so would not normally think of posting that they have them. For example, I found (at a garage sale) a 3-tiered turntable that holds baby food jars. Not knowing anyone with a baby at the moment, I posted asking for jars, and quickly had someone happily offering me the 24 jars they'd have tossed or recycled normally. Oh, and in case you're wondering, I painted the lids, and it now sits in my craft room organizing yet showing off all sorts of little sparklies and buttons & so forth.

                            Madness takes it's toll....

I gave away a lawn mower one time on there, and the guy was at my house in less than an hour. Ha ha.
