  • Racist Cabbie?

I've always had problems with cabbies but not very much. Lately, though...

Had a skinny, black guy around late 30s arrive around 3 am. He wasn't acting drunk or high or aggressive so I asked if I could help him.

Guy: Yeah could you call me a cab? I've been trying to wave one down and they wouldn't stop.
Me: Okay I'll call you one and it should be here soon.
    Guy: K
He sits and I call him one. I do my work and soon a cab pulls up.
    Guy: Is that mine?
    Me: I think so.
    Guy: K bye.
He leaves and I go to the back to do some paperwork. Soon I hear the door bell again. It's the guy, he's back.
    Me: Something wrong?
Guy: *Politely, but with suppressed anger* He left me, he refused to take me. He took one look at me and refused. I guess the cabbies around here are really racists!
Me: *shocked* Really? Well, they've taken black people before. So I don't think that's it. Let me call them up. Maybe that one was crazy. *calls dispatcher* Yes I just made a booking for this guy. He says the cabbie took one look and drove off, leaving him.
Dispatcher: Well, the cabbie says that the guy came up swearing at him.
    Me: Oh really?
    Guy: What'd they say?
Me: The cabbie says you were swearing at him.
Guy: Ridiculous! I was speaking very politely.
Me: Yes I find it hard to believe that you would, since you were very nice with me. *to dispatcher* Could you send someone else?
    Dispatcher: *agrees*
    Me: Thanks!
So the guy waits and waits, and no one ever shows up. I kind of feel bad for him. I mean I don't know what happened. I wasn't there. However the guy was very nice and well spoken to me, not a thug. Maybe he hates cabbies and got an attitude with them. Maybe cabbies hate him. Who knows? Still, it's a rotten thing to do, call for them, and have them leave you there. Silly. :P And unbusinesslike. :P

The stereotype "cabbies are racists" exists in many countries, and it's unfortunate incidents like this that reinforce it.

Mom once had a campus cop wait with her for a cab and the guy didn't even slow down when he went past the school. The cop tried chasing him down but then came back and had dispatch call for a new cab.

The first driver said he waited...cept you could see him zooming by on both the dash cam and the libraries camera. He then said that he's had too many punk students ditch him on money...Mom's almost 70.

As far as I know he doesn't get choice routes anymore. Some cabbies just...profile.

In this case, I have to agree that the attitude of the cab company isn't looking good. They needs some disciplinary action; I think there's a sort of 'cab union' that would sort-out those drivers!

We had a cab company that my hotel used alot. One driver was...creepy towards all the women on the overnight, despite us saying no to his advances. We confided in another driver; an old timer who brought us coffee and was awesome to talk to. Then we never saw creepy driver again. Old timer said that him and his fellow drivers weren't going to risk losing the hotel's business and we were really nice girls, so the rest of them had told creepy driver never to come to the hotel and bother us again or they were going to break his legs!

My husband drove cabs for a while. He's ... let's just say he's not the most handsome man, and some skin issues can make him look less than perfectly groomed. So some passengers would profile him.

He ended up getting regular jobs taking escorts, prostitutes and other 'working girls' to and from their late-night jobs. They typically tipped well - good for us - and appreciated having someone they could trust to get them safely from A to B.

Many cabbies refused those girls - my husband never had any problems at all. Reliable, appreciative clients.

          2. If you're consistently getting results you don't want, change what you do.
          3. Deal with the situation you have now, however it occurred.
          4. Accept the consequences of your decisions.

Do you ever have a choice in cab companies? Because I'd start being selective about the company I used.
