I've recently started going back to Curves again after a hiatus of a couple of months. (I stopped because the person I was going with stopped -- I'm not good at doing things for myself, but if you add 'don't let someone down' into the mix, I will run through fire, so I NEED someone to work out with in order to stick with it.) The Sucky Curves Lady is still there.
SCL (as she will now be called) "works" at Curves, and is clearly just phoning it in, as it were. Her level of customer service is probably the reason that the Curves I go to isn't doing very well. You'd think that where I live, which is pretty upscale and brimming with soccer moms, lots of people would go to Curves, but there's never more than one or two people there when I go, which is at a peak time. She's rude, she ignores people often, she refuses to get up from behind her desk, and she's got a total martyr complex about how haaaaard she works at all her jobs and her schooling. I'd be sympathetic, except from what I can see, she doesn't actually work very hard at all. She just shows up.
Anyway, today I get in, and hear two ladies commenting about how warm it is. They ask her if it's supposed to be that warm. She says: "It's just you guys. You're working up a sweat!". I remark that no, it feels warm to me too, and I just got here. She ignores me. I happen to glance at the thermostat as I pass it, and it's 75 degrees. A little warmer than usual, but whatever. Maybe she's trying to conserve energy.
Someone else comes in a while later, almost immediately comments on the heat. SCL does nothing. As I pass the thermostat, I notice that it's 78 degrees and also the AC doesn't seem to be on. (The thermostat is the same one as we have where I work, so I know it pretty well.) So I say: "I don't think the AC is on." She ignores me again.
At this point, my friend, who's fairly overweight, is wilting from the heat and decides to call it quits. I know 78 doesn't sound that hot, but when you're in an enclosed room where there's not a lot of breeze or airflow and you're doing weight training and cardio, it feels a lot hotter than it is. I was pouring out sweat.
After my friend leaves, another lady comes in, and she too remarks on the heat. This is where the whole thing came to a head.
SCL = Sucky Curves Lady
OL = Other Lady
Me = The star of the tale!
OL: Is the AC broken? It's really hot in here.
SCL: *hardly paying attention* No.
OL: The thermostat says it's 80 degrees in here.
SCL: I don't know. I haven't touched it.
OL: It's kinda warm.
SCL: *says nothing, doesn't bother to even look at the thermostat*
At this point, I walked over to the thermostat and flicked it on.
Me: It was turned off.
SCL: *looks up at me and shoots me a death glare*
Me: *helping her save face, because I'm nice that way* That's the same thermostat as we have at work. Ours seems to shut itself off, too.
SCL: You're not supposed to mess with it.
Unbelievably, SCL then got up off her lazy ass for the first time, walked over to the thermostat, AND TURNED IT OFF. When both of us stared at her, she turned it back on, but seriously. It was 80 degrees in there. I do not keep my house at 80 degrees in the summer when I am NOT working out. Hell, I don't even keep my house at 80 degrees in the WINTER when it is freezing cold outside.
Lady, I would not have messed with your thermostat if you had taken the hints of the FOUR PEOPLE before me and gotten up to see if maybe the fact that every single person to come in complained about the heat might mean, I don't know, that it was too hot.
Mr. Spider thinks that I should figure out who the owner of the local Curves is and write them a letter laying out what happened. I'm hesitant, because when the whole situation came to a head, there were two of us there, plus SCL, so she'd know who complained if word got back to her. There isn't another Curves nearby, and I really enjoy the atmosphere there, SCL aside, so I don't really want to burn any bridges. I don't know of another fitness club anywhere near where I live that has the same non-judgmental attitude towards how skinny/sexy/hardcore anyone is.
