  • No, I'm Not Trying to Pull Anything Over On You

The "Bigotry Level 9" thread reminded me of my worst GameStore experience. It wasn't really sucky as much as bemusing.

So, background: My sister and I are both fans of CryPlays on Youtube. One of his finished plays is The Walking Dead point-and-click RPG. My sister is 17-turning-18, and I'm 18. I had been saving The Walking Dead as a surprise Christmas present for my sister, but my parents were at a complete loss as to what to get her, so I walked them through how to get a PC Download of The Walking Dead.

The Walking Dead isn't the most child-friendly game, with most of the major characters dying, some sexual situations, some swearing, and lots of violence. Both my sister and I already knew this, and my Mom couldn't give less of a s*it. (She let me read the Xanth series when I was in Elementary school, and she read it with me. I missed most of the more 'adult' stuff, but I do remember having to make a cover for one of the books, as it had a nude woman on the cover.)

Mom: Alright, how do I do this?
Me: Ask her for "The Walking Dead" PC Download.
Mom: Can I have er. The Walking Dead on... download?
Cashier: Let me see if we have it. Yes, we do, and it's xx.
    Mom: Alright, I'll get that.
Cashier: Alright, just to let you know, it's rated M.
Me: Yeah, probably for swearing, violence, all that fun stuff.
Cashier: *reading the back of the case* Swearing, intense violence, sexual situations...

Mom seems less-than-concerned. The Cashier admits they don't know how to do a PC Download. I assure them I've done it before, and I'll walk her through it.

I was more confused than anything. I wasn't trying to pull anything over on anybody, and on the scale of 'adult' games, The Walking Dead is pretty tame, with its cartoon graphics, and how its more of an interactive tv show than anything.

I basically grew up in that store. Whenever I got money, I'd take my old games and trade them in, and use that, and the money, to get new games. I was in there the week before and got Deus Ex, Fallout 3 GOTY, Fallout NV GOTY, and Assassin's Creed 3, so it's not like they haven't checked my I.D. once or twice. Plus that was the only time they read-out the back of the box, which we could have done if we were that concerned.

So that's not nearly as bad as Bigotry, but there it is. My worst GameStore story.

You know, the cashier was probably mentioning the rating for your mom's sake, in that s/he wouldn't get in trouble for not warning you if it was just you, but it would look better on him/her to say the standard lines in front of your mom. If anything I think it's a compliment to your maturity that they broke the rules for you when your mom wasn't there.

I got in trouble in high school for reading "The Color of her Panties". It's not porn, I promise!

Piers (X)Anthony has written porn - but not in Xanth. (And not very good porn, either. He's much better at young adult fiction.)
        Seshat's self-help guide:
        1. Would you rather be right, or get the result you want?
        2. If you're consistently getting results you don't want, change what you do.
        3. Deal with the situation you have now, however it occurred.
        4. Accept the consequences of your decisions.

Yeah, you just think it wouldn't have been necessary, because I was clearly knowledgeable about the game, and I was forthcoming about why it would have been rated M.

As for the Xanth series, having read it again, it wasn't porn, I'd never call it that. It could have just been considered too adult for me. Especially since I read all the books out when I was in 3rd grade (which at this time was 8. Can you believe how many he's got out now?)

most likely this. We've seen it on some of the stories here where children under 15 try to buy a mature game alone - or try to talk Mommy & Daddy into getting it for them.... only to have the cashier inform the parent of the content and the parent freak out and get mad at the kids for picking it out.

            My sister is 17-turning-18, and I'm 18.
This however means you're also both legally old enough to play the game IIRC.

It actually makes a lot of sense that the employee asked your mom that. PC Downloads (and any digital content, actually) is not returnable. Its one of those better safe than sorry situations - if they hadn't said that & your mom had had an issue with the content? You probably would have gotten a refund, but the company would still be out the $ for the sale.
