Two trucks, six wheel cement mixers. The rear truck broke down empty, a hundred m or so from a level crossing, front truck sent with a drawbar to go tow in the casualty.
These trucks have automatic gearboxes, so pull away quite slowly. Slowly enough, it turns out, that they can't make it clear across the level crossing without the second set of barriers coming down *between the two trucks.* The lights/sirens must have been busted, say the drivers, as they didn't hear anything.
Front driver realises the predicament his mate is in, stuck on the crossing, and does the sensible thing- boots it, pulling the barrier clean off.
Rail PR droid went on the local TV news, and accused the truckers of.... racing. Tachographs made short work of that lie. Cashier at the garage by the crossing confirmed the lack of sirens. Health and Safety gave both barrels to rail folk, I gather.
