  • What's your problem?!

We encountered someone on the road today whose behavior mystifies me at best.

Hubs, Little Ara and I were on our way home from dinner a little bit ago. It was already dark, and the road we were on was hilly, winding, and long. We ended up behind some dinky little red truck, and the guy driving slowed waaay down to ~15, in a 55 zone. At first we thought he was having trouble getting the truck up a hill, since he sped up on the other side, but then he slowed down again on a flat stretch of road.

We followed him for a couple miles hovering around 15mph, until we reached a passing zone, then I suggested to Hubs that we pass him. We made an attempt, the guy sped up with us (trying to race, I guess?) and zoomed off. We got back in our lane and were just glad we didn't have to deal with him anymore.

I really don't understand what he was trying to do. Show off that his crappy little truck was fast?

Not to sound paranoid, but I feel like that had real potential for disaster... On the one hand, possible impaired driving. On the other hand, some kind of road rage? A close relative of mine would get mad when someone was tailing him (not saying you were doing that!) and slow down, then when the person tried to pass he'd speed up. Made for some fun family moments I can tell you that! /sarcasm

That's what I was feeling. Hubs thought he was just being an asshole, but I was more concerned about him possibly running us off the road or something.

Could have been drunk or high. Then when he realized you were watching him, he took off so you couldn't report him.

In my youth, I had driven a couple of times under the influence of a LOT of weed. And I was going about 15 in a 45. Fortunately no cops saw me doing it. I'll never do that again.

One the weird thing I've noticed about a few drivers in general, is they HAVE to be in front. They cannot stand to be behind someone else, even if they are planning on driving slower than everyone else. So when he noticed you were going to pass him, he sped up so you couldn't. I'm almost surprised you didn't catch up to him going 15 again.

the other option-he was on a cell phone and didn't realize how slow he was going

I've noticed it's usually people distracted by their phones who slow down like that. When you try to pass them (or something interesting comes up like a downhill stretch) they realize they're slow and speed up.

Had a driver like that on the interstate once. It was late at night and we were the only two on that stretch of highway. She was going 45 on a 70, but whenever I tried to pass her she'd speed up. Then I'd get behind her and she'd slow down again. I finally was able to pass her, but I had to hit 90 to do it! When I caught up with a semi, I positioned myself so that she was stuck behind both of us (doing 60 on a 70 now) and just let her suffer for five miles or so until her speed mysteriously dropped off again. I was thinking impaired driver on that one.
