  • Driftin' away...

I have no idea how this happened, I have no idea why this happened, only that it happened in front of me this past afternoon...

While driving back towards the office, I ended up in a line of cars waiting at a light. The light turned green, the cars in front of the car in front of me started moving, the car in front of me didn't move. I honked my horn briefly, the guy in front of me started to move, and stuck his hand out the window as if to say 'thanks' or 'sorry'.

As we started moving, I noticed the car in front of me begin to drift towards the double yellow line. At first, I thought it was to let a bicyclist heading the wrong way (i.e. towards us on our side of the road) in the bike lane go past (he also had a box tied to the back rack of his bike). After the bicyclist passed, the left wheels of the car in front of me stayed roughly parallel to the double yellow line, though he didn't actually enter the other lane. I thought he was trying to avoid the manhole covers, or something.

After some of this, we came to a red traffic light, and waited. Once the light turned green, the car in front of me started moving, and immediately began to drift towards the curb. I figured the driver would notice his mistake, and correct it. Nope! the drift continued, and shortly after we'd gone through the intersection, WHAM!!! The other car smacked right into a telephone pole!

Shortly after the impact, and as I was going around it, I saw the driver (a shirtless guy) open the driver's door and jump out. I briefly pulled over to the side of the road in shock, wondering whether or not I should call 911. I soon spotted a detail cop down the street, standing near a bucket truck. I pulled away from the curb, rolled my window down, and told the cop that there had been an accident (I'm fairly certain he already knew, owing to the loud noise it made). Definitely one of the odder things I've seen in all my years of driving...

Yeah, probably texting. Could be under the influence, too.

I was watching a driver constantly drift while driving on a scenic highway (one lane in either direction) with a speed limit of 55 mph. It has rumble strips, and this guy kept drifting onto them. They're so loud, but I watched him stay on them for long stretches. At that speed he'd really hurt himself and others.

My initial guess was DUI, but texting sounds like a possibility as well (though the fact that he pulled away from the second light when it actually turned green makes me unsure). I have no idea whether or not he tried to run away; all I know is that he opened the door of the car and got out of it as I was passing the wreck. Still very peculiar to me...
