I've been thinking about a dash cam, especially when I can start driving myself. Just need to get the extra money for that (hard to do when you have monthly utilities/rent/groceries/et al.)
partner has a front and rear that ran $50 total for the pair, and the cord for the rear is long enough to be used in a van.
Honestly.... the image of that in my head made me go "AWESOME!"..... and then I remembered I am terribly strange.-Red dazes

There is a very decent dash cam available at Wally World for $40. I have one for those "just in case" times.

I would definitely like to know where the $50 pair came from, tho. I really want a rear-facing camera!

I got mine from Amazon, for about $45. It's eh. My cigarette lighter apparently continues to be powered while the car is off. So if I forget to unplug or turn off the dash cam, it will keep recording. Also, this means I have to remember to plug it in each time I get in the car, and the stupid screen always comes on, and then I have to turn it back off. I wonder if the powered cigarette lighter would have the same affect on a different brand. Also, after a driving for some hours on the highway, I noticed there is one screw/fastener that loosens. Then the video gets bumpy. See clip, a bit into it I go over a bridge and the bumpiness is noticable, I think.

Regardless, I'm not going to return it at this point, it does it's job.

Love it when hit and run drivers get their comeuppance.
Yep, seeing them get pwned is awesome. Most of you know that I had some asshole destroy my parked car back in August. He did about $4K worth of damage before taking off. Didn't get far--as I was dealing with the cops, an Access driver flagged him down, and said there was a smashed-up car sitting in the middle of the street around the corner. Seems the other driver tried to flee...but because his car was so smashed up, he dumped it. Cop went down there, saw the blue paint down the side, and matched it up with the damage to my car. Turns out that the asshole was driving without a license, the insurance on the heap had been canceled, among other things.

Car got impounded, and the asshole and his mom (it was her car) are now in jail for a laundry list of charges--hit and run, failure to report an accident, fleeing the scene of an accident, driving without insurance, failing to report to PennDOT about their insurance getting dropped, impeding traffic, and reckless driving. As of today, the car is still sitting where the police towed it. They'll never release it, as the assholes cannot prove it's even insured.

Someone did something similar to my car about four years ago now. That particular aficionado of gluteal haberdashery (love that phrase!) hit my car so hard that it was knocked 6-8 feet forward, and put both passenger-side wheels up on the curb. (Roughly $3K damage, and yeah, it was totaled.) Then he backed up and took off, and tried to hide in the trailer park across the street. Of course, in the process he nearly hit one of my neighbors, who - and I can't imagine why - promptly called the police. And the trailer park he tried to hide in... only had one way out.

The driver had at least one civil lawsuit filed against him (by me), and at some point fled the state, then returned and got arrested. I actually got a phone call from the police investigating whether or not I'd been compensated for the damage to my car, because if not the judge was going to append that to the guy's punishment. (I dismissed my lawsuit because I'd actually gotten his insurance information by that point, and his insurance did pay out.)

IIRC, they are pay before. They have a drive thru as well as a walk up window. They also have outside seating.

Don't eat there . . . their burgers are not done . . . unless you like your burger cremated.

Unfortunately, we don't have any update yet. Mom is still trying to get hold of the officer who wrote the report to get it corrected and he still hasn't returned her phone calls.

I've suggested she contact his supervisor and let him (or her) know what is going on. Maybe that will help get this corrected sooner so we can get the claim filed for the repairs.

I hope they nail that asshole. I'm currently dealing with my own recent accident where the guy is making up lies about how the accident happened (he was at fault). My insurance is paying to fix my car, minus the deductible, and hopefully my insurance company can get that back from the other guy. I may never find out the final result, since my insurance company is handling it, but I really hope karma comes back to bite him in the ass.

And I totally understand being shaken, I was a total mess afterwards. I did take a very short video at the accident site and a few pics, so at least I have that evidence to support my version of events in case it's ever needed.

One way to know that things worked out in your favor bainsidhe is if you get your deductible back. That will mean that the other insurance company has agreed that their client was at fault in the accident and is assuming financial responsibility as per their coverage agreement.

Dealing with insurance companies is frustrating enough without having to also deal with some jerk who damaged your vehicle and left.

I have a work friend who's 4X4 pickup was badly damaged in a parking lot by a hit and run asshole. She lives off the grid, hence the need for that gas guzzling monster. (Off the grid here means unmaintained dirt roads and hauling your own water among other things.) Despite her paying the extra insurance for her modified truck, they will only pay for a small rental car. If she wants something that can actually get her home, she is going to have to pay the extra charge.

You're not kidding. My mother had an aggravating experience dealing with Big Orange's insurance company when one of Big Orange's rental trailer came loose and damaged her truck.

I would assume he did - the cops contacted me late last winter, so it's been almost a year by now, and damaging my car was probably the least of this guy's offenses. I'm not privy to the charges, but based on what I've been told, off the top of my head I'd come up with DUI, leaving the scene of an accident, interstate flight to avoid prosecution... not the sort of things judges usually let slide.
