When I was in college I had an argument with another cyclist about the rules of the road and how they applied. He tried to take the side that cyclists were like pedestrians. They didn't have to follow the rules of the road and ALWAYS had the right of way.

A few weeks later he got a ticket for running a stop sign. Gawd I wish I coulda been there to see the look on his face when the cop busted him.

Most cyclists around here think that they are cars and have the same rights to the open road as cars. Meaning they can drive in traffic, taking up a lane, knowing they can't keep up with the speed limit, knowing they back traffic up..........

Why are there so many bike lanes in this city when most of them prefer to show everyone how gifted they are, and ride bike in the middle of the road and back traffic up for blocks and blocks?

Last year, a cyclist was killed when he blew through a red light (because obviously cyclists don't have to follow the law, right?) and got smacked by an SUV.

Then earlier this year, a high schooler on a bicycle got smacked by an old lady. Before anything was shown on the news, sure, most people were thinking that a senile crazy old lady ran over a cyclist, but then come to find out, once again....cyclist ignoring posted signs/lights, pulls out into traffic, gets squished....

Took out by a bike to the rear.
        Actually, it was a Tercel

Seriously though, many bicyclists simply can't get the idea...that even a *little* car, is going to win if it hits them. Oh, and things like trees, telephone poles, other cars, etc. do not yield to flying riders

Tell him to try that trick when there's a bus coming... sure, he'd be right, but he'd also be dead. O_o Many lycra louts who believe that have been scraped off the road with a spatula...

Don't put your damn dirty hands on my car, you've got a foot, use it, my car is not a damn rest stop for you.
If you have enough room between you and the car in front take you foot off the brake just so the car slowly moves forward. watch as they try to keep adjusting their balance. When they seem to get it, stop.

You will usually get flipped or or yelled at. My response, stop using MY car as your resting spot.

            Almost forgot...
A friend of the family is a state cop. When he/she worked traffice one of the most common excuses cyclists would give for not stopping is that they had used all their energy to build up momentum and didn't want o loose it. Yeah, so do cars. Its call energy in the form of burning gas to move a piston, etc, etc, to turn the wheels.

Turned around, and saw someone peeling their face off my rear window Seems he wasn't paying attention...and hit me. Didn't stop him from threatening to call the cops. At least nothing happened--instead, he got cited for being a bit tipsy
Well of course Protege it's YOUR fault. How DARE you get in HIS way like that!

It's totally irrelevant how shit-faced he was. You got in his way and caused him to hit you. How awful. You probably ruined the rest of his drinking day too and should have been arrested on the spot!

One teacher in my area, who rode his bike to work when it was nice out lost his life when he pulled out onto Main Street without looking and was killed on impact with a vehicle.

The driver of the vehicle was not found at fault as the guy pulled right out in front of him.

Still shook the driver up quite badly even though it wasn't his fault.

A friend of my brother's dad had a guy pull out in front of him. Unfortunately, he was older, and not agile enough to avoid the car, and he didn't survive the collision.

Took out by a bike to the a.
                      Edited for rhyme scheme

As for "bikes don't need to obey road rules" ... What was that guy on? ~_~ Here, at least, bikes are (supposedly) treated by the law as cars that (a) are not allowed on the interstate nor on non-pedestrian bridges, and (b) can get away with going against the flow of traffic. They're supposed to obey all "car" AND "pedestrian"-specific traffic laws.

probably too late to ad but wear light clothes at night and if riding on a sidewalk have a bike bell or horn to let people know "hey I'm coming through!"

and yeah, almost hit a biker when I was driving since I did not see him until he/she was in the headlights because of the fact the person had no reflectors on the bike AND was wearing dark clothes at NIGHT
