Riding my bike to and from work is a great way to save 80 bucks a month, but it comes at a price in its own way.
Cell phones
It's bad enough when car drivers do it, but the past couple weeks I have seen 1-2 cyclists do it every single day. they take out their phone, text message, or call someone and proceed to ride their bike one handed down a busy street (chestnut.. a road that leads off to the parkway at one point). they go slow, wobble and endanger other cyclists trying to get by them to go a normal bike speed. PULL OVER AND CALL, YOU PSHYCO!
smoking
some cars have a place to but the cig. but not on a bike. I see these folks half as often as cell phone users, but they are just as dangerous, more so for me. I am allergic to cigerette smoke, not sure exactly what in it, but I can't breath well if i get a good enough breath in. which was terrible when I realized a guy riding his bike infront of me, whome I was trying to pass, puffed out a big smoke trail that flew by his head and right into my heavily breathing face. I had to pull over to clear my lungs with some healthy hacking before trusting myself on the road again. I used to be rather resiliant to it when I worked at an open air bar on the shore. but that was a long while ago, and I have become weak to it again.
parking jerks
after crossing a bridge there is a disgnated bike lane, that runs to the right of the road and to the left of parking spots along the road. I can't count the amount of times a driver would zip past me, and then stop only 15ft ahead, in the bike lane, to paralell park. so he essentially goes from passing me, blocking me, and then backing into me. forcing me into the road, and possibly getting hit by a car if I am not lucky or fast enough.
Joggers
there is a sidewalk that is over 10ft wide! why are you jogging in the bike lane!? and in the middle of it so I have to either get hit by sideview mirrors on one side or a car on the other!
unruley cyclists
most cyclists in a city never follow road laws. they zip through red lights, go between cars, and cross over crosswalks while people are on them. but generally they get a passing stink eye from me. they aren't in my way while I ride, but i know they cause trouble. until they start going the opposite direction in the bike lane. there is room for one and a half bikes! when you go the other way, you cause alot of trouble for anyone going the right way. it annoys the hell outta me. if they are going to go the wrong way, they should do it slowly on the sidewalk (legal out of the business district) so they don't endanger any cyclists going the right way.
