  • An amusing winter accident anecdote

While reading some of the other winter accident stories here, I was reminded of one that happened to a neighbor of mine many years ago.

He was driving home one afternoon. It was snowing heavily. None of the roads had been closed yet, but conditions weren't very good.

Someone had hit a slippery patch were the road took a curve, and had slid off into the ditch, where he was stuck. My neighbor then hit that same spot, slid into that same ditch, and skidded right into that same stuck car. No injuries, but some minor damage to both cars.

As luck would have it, the very next car to come by was a cop... who skidded out and hit both cars. The officer gets out, surveys the damage and says "Well, I think I know what happened here." Everyone chuckles.

Just then, a 4th car hits the curve, and skids right into the cruiser.

At that point, the cop got on the radio to recommend closing the road

Sounds like that road needs a barrier next to it or something. But I'm in Florida and know nothing about snowy conditions, so maybe that's not a good idea.

At least no one was hurt and it makes for an amusing story

It's cute because nobody got hurt.

Course, sliding around in an empty parking lot is pretty fun...

Also a good way to learn how to handle real ice driving conditions. Better to learn why you don't hit the brakes on an empty lot instead of when there is a car or ditch in front of you.

...unless you do what one of my high-school classmates did. One winter, the student lot was covered in ice and snow. As usual, the district didn't disappoint by half-assing the plow job. That is, they ran the plow down the middle of the lot, and then shoved the snow into a huge pile in the middle. Whatever snow that wasn't removed, simply got packed down. Ideal conditions for falling on one's ass, in other words

Anyway, as my classmate was attemping a 'doughnut,' he lost control...and skidded his new-and-heavily-customized Dodge pickup...right into one of the light poles Took out the front corner, fender, passenger door, etc. Needless to say, his parents were *pissed!* He'd only had that truck less than a week!
