  • WTF is up with bikes and skateboards????

    this summer I have been encountering a strange phenomona

    It is called ---->

    1. I have a skateboard or bicycle and I MUST ride in the middle of the lane or road. and I WILL continue to ring in the middle of the lane or road even IF I KNOW there is a 4000 pound hunk of metal coming down the road at the same time and in the same direction.

    2. I am waking and I just want to meander around the middle of the street not bothering to look to see if any cars are traveling the same road I am. AND I GUESS I will NOT move to the sidewalk a little quicker when I see (maybe NAAAA I don't see no stinking car) car traveling the same road as I

    even more fun when done in packs or groups. not ONE of these road kills wanna bes even looks while in the street nor before crossing it/straggling, moping along.
    I'm lost without a paddle and headed up SH*T creek.

    Bonus if it is a bunch of unsupervised children in a large crowd just standing in the middle of the street. Taking up both sides of the street. Not budging when a pickup truck is coming toward them. No that would make sense

    Bikes and walkers do have the right to the street, but they also have the right to common sense. Some of them just fail to invoke that right.
    Engaged to the amazing Marmalady. She is my Silver Dragon, shining as bright as the sun. I her Black Dragon (though good honestly), dark as night..fierce and strong.

      Dunno about skateboards, but bicycles, by law, have that right, at least in WI. They emphasize this in driving school. Stupid, I know.

        by law they MAY have the right, BUT to take up the whole lane and just slowly be riding down the street as if, like an mega EW, you are the only thing that matters is just wrong.

          I have this argument with my husband, I'm still convinced that the speed you're going at makes a difference (unless it's uphill of course). And I normally refuse to take the whole lane when there's only one lane in my direction. He, however, is way faster than I am (does close to traffic speed most of the time), and he's right in that, for him, it's much safer for him to ride in the middle of the lane. He, like me, is willing to share the lane with cars if they'll share. However after he's had a couple of cars not move at all out of the lane to pass him, he'll ride in the centre, because it's obviously not safe for him to ride to the side. (Ontario HTA says that you can share a lane if you're passing, and that bikes must ride as far to the right as practicable, not as far as possible, so both ways are perfectly legal).

          However, I don't understand the people who just meander on their bikes in the first place. If you're going somewhere GO THERE. Don't just drift along and tie up traffic. Take the bus already like the rest of the world. (e-bikes have become popular here. Can you tell I'm bitter about slow moving vehicles?)
