  • My, your truck certainly slides gracefully...

So we got over 6inches of snow today, starting around 2pm and on into 11PM at night. The main road I had to travel before hitting the highway still had 6inches in most places, except for pieces of lanes cleared here and there. Speed is 40, but most of us (the dozen or so on the road) were going 20 or less and giving each-other plenty of personal space.

    Enter big white pick-up truck.

The guy cruises by me in the lane to my right that everyone is avoided because it hasn't been plowed yet. As he passes me uncomfortably close he's fishtailing all over the place, but keeping-up at about 35 or so. He hits the brakes at the intersection, but fishtails on-through. He then picks-up even more speed going down a hill, fishtailing the whole way; I see him braking, but it ain't slowing him down. He passes people every chance he gets, fishtailing the whole way and making them move-over for safety's sake, until I turned to get onto the highway.

I fully expect to see a photo of his crumpled truck in the paper tomorrow...

If often have to ask myself why I see so many trucks, Jeeps and SUVs littering the side of the freeway after a major snow (or sometimes not so major) and this answer my question. These people have to learn that 4 wheel drive does not mean that you don't have to drive in inclement weather safely. No traction is no traction whether you driving a unicyle, motorcycle, front wheel drive, rear wheel drive or four wheel drive. In fact, I think in some conditions, four wheel drive may make things worse for you.

I nearly got hit last night...by an idiot in a truck attempting similar antics.

I'm walking back to my car, after picking up a few things at the local Yellow Tag store. It had been snowing on the way home, so the parking lot was a bit slick. Slick enough, that I nearly fell on my ass while walking from the car.

Anyway, as I'm heading back to the car, some douche in a blue Ford Ranger is speeding down the aisle, made a sudden left turn...and came within a foot of nailing my car I was like are you doing, which made the driver laugh. You're laughing at nearly hitting someone's car? Fuck you. I hope you hit a tree on the way home

Four wheel drive does not mean four wheel stop!

This was the first thing they taught people coming into Minot AFB.

And yeah, most of the vehicles I see in ditches are ones the drivers probably purchased because they thought it would protect them from stuff like that.

Gimme my lil tiny Fit any day of the week. With the right tires, it's actually better at snow than most large cars, because of how light it is. Tends to just sorta... glide along the top. As long as my speeds are low, I'm usually good.

But then, I know how to drive in snow (don't, unless you absolutely must, and even then, reconsider), and I'm not stupid about my speed.

I still want a Subaru, though. That's totally my next car.

I love my Forester and will totally tell anyone and everyone that Subarus are awesome. I've felt as safe as is possible driving that thing, you can really feel the ground nicely which makes it easier to judge a nice safe speed, and I've also pulled a fair number of big bad trucks out of snowy/icy/muddy/whatever ditches.

I visited a friend in a small town south of Uniontown, PA yesterday. You would think small town drivers would be more calm and relaxed. But the drivers in this particular town are aggressive and bad.

Yesterday as I while driving on the main drag, this truck from one the side alleys decided to pull out very abruplty and is fishtailing as well. The speed limit is 35 and he had to being atleast 60. A couple of miles up the road, surprise, he was tailgating another car and passed on a double yellow line.

This type of behavior is very common in that area. Why? I don't know.
