back up a min there hhc.

    A 21 hour shift?

Who in their right mind would set you up for that? I'd be screaming labour board as loud as I possibly could. That is well beyond illegal, it's unhealthy.
Actually I ended up working a full 24 hours, from 3pm Thursday to 3pm Friday. I was scheduled to keep right on working another 16 hours, from 3pm Friday to 7am Saturday, but I got the other third shifter to come in and work 2nd for me today, and here I am back at work after about 7 hours of sleep to work my 3rd shift tonight.

Want to know the kicker? The girl I worked for this morning eventually called around 5pm today to say that she would work for me if I was still here, but she was "really tired" and would just rather go home. Poor thing. The boss gets back from three months in India on Sunday, and I will be HAPPY to turn this monkey house back over to her.

At the same time I am laughing at her karma-induced spill, I feel bad for the person who had to clean it up. But then, it might have been worth it...
Stop me if you've heard this one, but... I had to clean it up.

The only difference between medical care professionals and hotel workers is that the medical people are given beds to sleep in. I somehow doubt HauntedHead is allowed to curl up and sleep for a few hours. I could be wrong though.
It's not a good idea to sleep, but I was able to lie down for a few hours and rest, even though I never went to sleep. I'm glad I did, too, because that was the only thing that kept me going the full 24 hours. I was still so tired when I was leaving though, that I nearly fell asleep at every red light between here and my house.

Woman: So you serve ALCOHOL but not coffee??? Thats insane!!

"Um, I said the machine is going through it's cleaning cycle....that implies that we do in fact serve coffee"

Since the tragic death of Libby Zion in New York City in 1984, many states & cities have passed laws limiting the hours that interns, residents and doctors can work. Unfortunately these laws are no more enforced than the laws that should apply to HauntedHead.

Ms. Zion died of serotonin syndrome, a toxic condition that arises when certain drugs are prescribed together. She was given Demerol on top of Nardil by a resident who had been on duty more than 20 hours. The drug interaction was listed in reference books, and a book was consulted, but the warning was missed. It has been presumed that missing the warning was due to fatigue. This diagnosis is still frequently missed today because there are so many drugs that can interact and cause it.

There have been many studies showing that sleep-deprived individuals are more impaired than people who are drunk.

So lordlundar is right, it is not at all healthy to stay up that long.
Some days, it's just not worth chewing through the restraints...

if i ever meet the guy who came up with this idea, i will seriously hurt him.

Yeah, I want a doctor that's been awake for 48 hours to operate on me.
I've never understood this. Obviously they have enough people to cover the whole schedule. Why the heck can't they manage to give them shifts with reasonable hours? Hell, the medical profession should have the strictest "do not work longer than xx hours" per shift with a maximum per day and per week limit, and it should be rigidly enforced.

I think it's criminal that the medical establishment not only inflicts unreasonable demands on the professionals who practice, but also play russian roulette with the health of everybody else.

As for the Ms Zion case, the pharmacist should have caught that. That is a lot of what a pharmacist's job is, after all.

I don't know about other states, but in California (if you're an hourly employee), if you work more than 8 hours in a day, the first 4 of overtime are at time and a half, and anything after 12 hours is double pay. And 40-60 hours in a week is time and a half, with 60+ at double time. Plus, the 7th day in a pay period is automatically double time, regardless of how many or few hours you've worked the rest of the week.

One of my temp jobs had me do a stint in payroll for 2 weeks while the regular person was on vacation.

                ^-.-^

A girl came to the front desk and asked me where the Starbucks is located. There isn't one in Hendersonville. I told her as much and she screamed, "You are kidding me! You cannot be serious!"
OMG - I just pulled something similar in Sheboygan. Only I was looking for a Dunkin Donuts.

I'm pretty sure I didn't scream. But I did say, "Please tell me you're kidding" and stared at the poor service guy with my mouth open.

No Starbucks and no Dunkin Donuts within an hour of the town. Thank god for small diners.

(And yes, I almost did cry).

If she was a severe coffee addict, she would be happy with gross, bitter, instant swill.
Definitely. It's for that exact reason I keep a jar of super nasty Suckway brand instant caffeinated dirt clods in my kitchen. I do love my Starbucks, but there are PRIORITIES. When Starbucks is closed, Longs is out of my favourite seizure-in-a-can, and my can of pricey French Vanilla instant is out, all that matters is getting caffeine in my bloodstream. For that, I'm surely willing to choke down some gross, bitter, instant swill. She is absolutely a dumb little princess.

However...after a 24-hour shift, I'm surprised it wasn't you frantically combing the town for Starbucks. Yeesh. I thought my 11.5 during our big power outage was bad. That's gonna be some sweet overtime pay, I bet, but damn. So not worth it. Sleep is good.
