People don't read signs or anything! I thought I was pretty good at reading signs until I went into a shop and the woman at the till went "that's a buy one get one free" I looked over and there was a massive sign saying so I think I facepalmed!

Question for those of you who work in retail stores that sell underwear:

If someone buys underwear that is in a sealed package and attempts to return it, with the packaging unopened (say it's the wrong size, or their child hated the color), is that still considered as "unreturnable" under such policies?

Just wondering...I have no cool story or experience related to this, other than once buying underwear that was, in fact, too small, but as I only discovered this after I opened the package and attempted (and failed) to put on one of the pairs of too-small underwear, I just pitched the lot.

I worked in the Men's underwear and furnishing department of Marshall Field's/Macy's for years. We took back underwear. If it was defective, we did a Damaged-out ticket on it and it went to the vendor (if possible.). We took back worn items too. If it was worn but not defective we usually had to have a manager make the final decision, because none of the sales clerks would do it.

Lots of folks bought swimsuits, tried them on at home and brought them back. As long as they had their tags, we took them back. (We had to assume that they tried them on over their underwear...)

Opened packs of underwear was damaged out, as no one wanted to buy opened packs, even if it was opened just to check the size.
I was angered at men who would open a three-pack of briefs to check the size (tearing the bag apart to do it!) then pick up an unopened bag to buy! I would sometimes ask why they didn't buy the bag they just tore into. They answered 'because that one is open!' Really, dude? YOU JUST OPENED IT YOURSELF!!
We had to damage out so much perfectly good clothing. It was a crime, really.
I asked the store manager why we couldn't give the stuff to one of the local men's shelters. He said they used to do it, but then the recipients brought back the donated stuff for refunds......so now they just trash it.
          I no longer fear HELL.
          I work in RETAIL.

Jester, I think a couple of stores might, my store will of its clearly not been opened, or worn we've exchanged a few, on the basis that the wife has thought the husband was a large when he was an extra large (example). But if the packaging is damaged then no.
