I'm exactly the same. I have this whole criteria of who can touch me in what manner, even with people I know. Luckily here in Aussie land, people don't touch you in general if they don't know you. Especially in the work place. Our sexual harrassment laws are very definite, and nobody wants to lose their job or be sued.

I would never dream of touching someone I didn't know personally. If I was friendly with regular customers, I still wouldn't touch them unless I socialised with them outside of work. And how many times does that happen?

I had a customer give me a "friendly" jab in the kidneys to get my attention once. Sadly for him he didn't know that my reaction to that kind of thing was to black out, remove the threat, come back to reality and appologize for any damage caused.

After a pleasent cup of coffee with two police officers, I was sent on my merry way and the guy was told that if he goes around punching people in the back, he shouldn't be surprised if one of them turns around and whoops his buttocks. Witnesses + video cameras also showed he clearly started the altercation... I just finished it.

No one at work touches me from behind now without clearly making sure I know they are there.

        *flabbergasted*

If someone did that and I was a store clerk, I would have taken the item away from him. This SC is one of those "yeah, but" jerks who think that because they have some flimsy excuse, they don't have to follow the rules everybody else follows. I'm really a no-nonsense person. I'd probably last less than a week on a retail floor unless I found a really cool place to work. I do much better in an office.

As for the little tap thing, I would politely inform them that if they ever touch me again in any manner that doesn't involve saving me from gross bodily harm, I will have them charged with battery. Most people don't know how it all breaks down, but battery is essentially "unlawful touching" even if that touching could have no possible way of causing injury. An example given would be someone poking you in the chest to emphasize a point, or spitting on you.

As I said, I doubt I'd last long in a retail situation.
