  • If the Fraud didn't work the First Time

    In my state, we are really cracking down on car insurance fraud. Insurance companies are now required to submit policy information for all their customers.

    In addition, if you come in and our computer does not show that you have active insurance, we must make a copy of your insurance, and send it in to the main office. Obvious fake insurance gets turned away, but in case it makes it through that stage, the state central office contacts the corporate insurance offices and verifies it.

    And if it turns out to be fake, you get a letter: you must report to your local DMV with valid insurance to replace your license plate. Your old plate is cancelled and you also have to pay a penalty.

    Just yesterday, 2 customers who had received one of those letters came in. With the same fake insurance. As in their insurance looked identical except for customer name and address. And my office was about 75 miles from where these people supposedly lived.

    Congratulations! You have hit the fraud jackpot! The penalty had increased exponentially. We have you flagged in the system. The phone number of your supposed insurance agent is being traced back. You might as well give up having a car because we are going to make you post bonds for a registration.

    You're welcome!
    To seek it with thimbles, to seek it with care;
    To pursue it with forks and hope;
    To threaten its life with a railway share;
    To charm it with forks and hope!

    I wish my state would do this. A large majority of the patients I see for injuries in car accidents were hit by drivers who don't have insurance, which is illegal but widely ignored. Wise people have coverage for being hit by under-insured motorists.
    Some days, it's just not worth chewing through the restraints...
