I believe the point is that the candles were JUST so she could use the coupon and not something she actually needed. Thus she would've been better off saving the coupon since it was otherwise a zero-sum game.
    Thanks Dave...
The coupon was for $10 off $40. She had spent $30, so she didn't qualify for the coupon. She spent $10 more on candles so she could use the $10-off coupon. Zero-sum game...she got nowhere.
Here Mr Customer, let me pull that out of my arse for you!

I was also including wear/tear on the vehicle, not to mention the wasted time...
But that's just SC math for you. It's not wasted time if they get something for free. And if they can waste *your* time while they're at it, Bonus!

Also, "herp herp derpty wharrgle eleventy!!!!" is absolutely going to be what I hear from now on every time I get a customer complaining on the phone at work
It's already all I hear. *sob* I need a booze. The rum and coke and eggnog (no, NOT mixed together) are wearing off.

I do this all the time when shopping for my kids' clothes. A store I shop at frequently has $10 off of $50 coupons. If I'm at $40, I might add a couple pairs of socks to get to $50, because, hey, free socks.

I think it's safe to say that the SC was telling the truth when she said she was one slice short of a pizza.

THIS must be why my local Pizza H opens every pizza box and shows me the pizza, telling me twice what's on it before they'll let me have my carry out!
They did that the last time I ordered from them (and that was at least 2 years ago.)

At my fave joint, I'll open the box and take a quick peek just to be sure. I've had an issue once or twice with the smaller size pizza being cooked TOO well done (12 inch size) If I get either a 14 or 16 inch, I don't have that issue.

Still love to get my pizzas there though. Their phone system may be a bit wonky (which makes it hard for me to hear when I'm calling in my order on my cell phone) but their NY style pizza makes those minor annoyances more than worth it.

But if she likes candles and will use them at some point it makes sense. I'd rather get $10 worth of candles for free now and use them later rather than have to spend $10 on candles in a few months when i need them.

Not that it has anything to do with the pizza scam which is a clear scam.

Not to mention many people do like to keep stuff around that can be grabbed and used as a gift, and candles make decent gifts for stuff like housewarmings and birthdays. I tend to keep stuff around I can use to do quick gift baskets - candles, cute little empty tins, makings for dreamcatchers [so I can whip one off in different colors or styles depending on the person to get it.]

You'd think the second trip back cost more than the pizza...
In a scammers mind the mission objective is getting over on people by any mean necessary. Lose a finger in the process? So what at least they got over on you. It's a control and conquer game for people like this. The GM rewarding him only made it worse because he got to fill his belly for free, get his money back and get over on the pizza joint. Mission accomplished. Gas was just a casualty of war.

BUT you will be surprised at how many times it does work out that way using that same twisted logic. My pizza place (franchise and corp. and mine is NOT the only one) is proof of that as they have taught the customers scammers what they can get away with and WIN.

                              Zero-Sum game.
But it's not a zero sum game. I'm not spending $10 to save $10. I'm not spending any more than I would have had I not used the coupon, I'm still spending $40. I'm just getting free socks as well. So I come out better.. how is that zero-sum?

                                Here's the coupon theory:
I have been told that it's proven by companies that the whole idea or principle behind coupons or 2-for pricings is NOT only a ploy to get you into the store and/or potentially buy more things...
If it is something on a great sale or coupon that you normally buy regularly, it is AWESOME to the companies because they know that the more product they put into your posession at one time will automatically enable you use more of it than usual. Almost double the speed of intake because "you've got plenty" or "it cost me so little"; "no worries". You will be buying more of that same product again in almost the same amount of time as you would have normally. I feel that it is at least somewhat true. I only save coupons if it is undoubtably an incedible deal or on life necessities that I will buy anyway. So...
Those candles are something that I see as an item that will be so easily extinguished, without thought or reason because they were "free". Did you really need those candles?
No, they were only the quickly decided prize for the reason why you held onto that useless coupon.
