He will find out.
A customer came in Friday afternoon (why do they always wait until the very end of the day?) saying that there were two charges on his son's checking account that his son claimed he didn't authorize. They were both processed through the son's debit card, so he asked me to hot card and close the debit card.
Since the dad was on his son's account, I was able to talk with him about it. I agreed to hot card the debit card. Then we looked at the transactions.
The first one was a recurring transaction that was coming from a particular website. He agreed to follow up with that website. He told me later that the transactions had been coming out of the checking account since at least July. Way to read your statements.
The second transaction was an ATM withdrawal. At our ATM. In our lobby. With a camera prominently displayed right above it. I told the dad that we would check the video and give him a call.
So we pulled up the video. Yep, it was him. The dad asked if he could see. He came in this morning, and we showed him the video. While we watched the first few seconds, the dad said his son had changed his story and told him that he had gone to the ATM, but he had only checked his balance - he hadn't withdrawn any cash. As we continued to watch, the son's lie unraveled. He clearly had two receipts and cash in his hand.
The dad left with this information, saying he would have a talk with his son. He didn't sound happy.
