    What the...?

If I puked in a restaurant, i wouldn't want to sit back down and continue eating. I'd want to go home and not think about food until I was feeling better (after leaving a very nice tip for the restauarant having to clean up my mess).

Some people are just filthy pigs.

Do you then throw up, and continue eating?
      THAT'S the eating disorder.
Yes, but it doesn't sound like he did that on purpose. That eating disorder tends to involve FORCING ones self to throw up and then continuing to eat. Stuffing yourself full, throwing up and continuing to eat is stupid, but not necessarily classified as an eating disorder

It is very much classified as an eating disorder, according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders IV. It is called Binge Eating Disorder, sometimes Compulsive Eating Disorder. It is characterized by eating massive amounts of food until one is uncomfortably full, often resulting in vomiting. The regurgitation is not considered purging, as in bulimia, because it is involuntary. This is an incredibly unhealthy, harmful eating pattern. Stuffing yourself full, vomiting, and then doing it again immediately is not normal and could well be indicative of deeper psychological issues.
Obviously, no one can diagnose this particular kid based on one witnessed incident. But I will say that if MY son displayed similar behaviour at a buffet, I would be deeply concerned. The fact that the father seemed undaunted by the incident might indicate that this has happened before and is par for the course.

Maybe he was reading about Rome in his history class.

Personally, I will try to eat something after throwing up. It's not that I'm hungry, but dry heaves (puking with nothing in your stomach) is probably the closest I will ever get to experiencing the pain of childbirth, assuming I never pass a kidney stone.

oh no...what were they thinking? after puking, wouldn't you guys not want any more food?
Didn't they used to do that in the Roman days? Go to a feast, stuff themselves, go off to puke it all up, then come back to the feast to stuff themselves some more?

Well, kiddo, it's not the Roman Era anymore. Food is meant to be enjoyed in moderation, not crammed down as fast as you can! There's a reason that Gluttony is one of the Seven Deadly Sins...

Besides look at Kobayashi from Japan...that guy regularly eats 50 hot dogs while he larger American counterparts can't make it to 35 or 40. He's 160 pounds. I guess what I'm saying is that its not necessarily an eating disorder that makes people eat a lot, it could be they are just really hungry and can hold it all in.
I've heard that thin people have an advantage over obese people in eating contests, because thin people's stomachs have room to stretch and expand, whereas the fat pushing down on top of and around the internal organs limits how much an obese person's stomach can expand.

That being said, my oldest stepson is about 5'10" and I would guess weighs about 160 lbs. I have seen him put away amounts of food at a buffet that would put linebackers to shame. He doesn't have an eating disorder, he can just eat a lot. But eating to the point where your food escapes, and then eating more? That's just gross.
He loves the world...except for all the people.

                Indubitably!

                I'm 5'4'', 130-140, comfy and muscled.

I can go to a buffet at 5pm and not leave until 8pm and eat the whole time. Metabolism is relevant to the stomach size, and controlling your dietal food the day before can make your stomach work very fast =p

I can't because I'm a fast eater. Eating out with my family at a buffet can be boring because I plow through my dinner and desert so fast. Meanwhile everybody else is still working on dinner.

Ugh....I'm afraid of food for a few days after a puke-o-rama. One of those things where I just kind of tentatively sip on broth or some applesauce until I'm sure I'm not gonna start hurling again, and then go for bland foods for awhile.

But then, I'm a gustatory wuss in that respect.

I stand corrected; not something I had ever heard of. You learn something new every day. Forgive me for questioning you?

My first husband was from New England and now and then would make something regional, like the best clam chowder I have ever had. His rule was that if you didn't find sand in it, it wasn't real clam chowder. Yeah, there was sand.

He decided to make codfish balls one time. A codfish ball is made from salted cod that is rinsed, then mixed with mashed potatoes, rolled in flour/bread crumbs, then deep-fried. Basically, a tasty cannonball.

My husband ate 4. I ate 2 1/2. His 16-year-old son ate 16. We literally sat there and watched the kid consume 16 of those things, keeping count in disbelief. He was about 6 feet tall and rock star skinny. It was amazing.
