  • Money-off Vouchers are Not the Same as Cash!

Not even 2 minutes after the SC from my previous post leaves, this idiot comes in. I had to serve her!

I shall give you some background first. We have these Save £5 When You Spend £10 On A Book vouchers that we gave to every customer 2 weeks ago, to be used for the week after. It is pretty straight forward. Buy a book that is £10 or more, present one of these vouchers and save £5. Easy, right? HA!

    *THIS IS WORD FOR WORD*
    Me= M
    Old Bag= OB

    M. Hello, can I help you?

OB. Yes, I would like to buy £10 worth of Book Tokens and then use this voucher to make it £15.

    M. Oh, um, that voucher can't be used to purchase Book Tokens, only books over £10.

OB. Why can't I use it to buy Book Tokens. It says "when yOu spend £10 get $5 off.

    M. Yes, but on a BOOK.

OB. I am buying Book Tokens that will be spent on books by the person I am buying them for, so I want to spend £10 on Book Tokens and make it £15 by using this voucher to save the £5.

    M. No, basically, if you were to buy a BOOK that was £10 you would be able to save £5 on the one BOOK, so you would only have to pay £5 for it. It can only be used on books. It says here on the voucher itself.

OB. Well, ok then, I will have the £10 worth of Book Tokens and then choose a £5 BOOK for free.

    M. I can't do that, that is not how it works. You have to buy ONE BOOK over £10 and then you can save £5. The voucher has no cash value...it is not the same as cash. What you are asking me to do, is the same as if I gave you £5 from the till in exchange for the voucher. It doesn't work that way.

OB. Well, it should. It says £5, but YOU make the rules!

    M. Actually, I do not make the rules, head office does.

OB. Well, YOU follow them, which is juat as bad!

    M. I have to follow them if I want to keep my job.

OB. Hmmph! Fine, I will have the £10 worth of Book Tokens

*I then ask her to choose a card and envelope for her Book Tokens. We have about 10 choices, all of which have very nice pictures on them for all ages and sexes*

OB. Ugh! These are all so ugly and horrible! Grumble grumble grumble

    M. (finally fed up) Look, if you think the cards are so horrible, you are welcome to buy your own card, or if you wish you can get your Book Tokens from another shop, up to you!

*so, she buys them and throws her card choice at me*

OB. Since you have such ridiculous rules and I couldn't use the voucher for a BOOK TOKEN, can I give this to my grandson, who the Book Tokens are for, for him to use when he uses the Book Tokens?

    M. Yes, you can give it to him, but beware that they do have an expiry date, so he can't use them after that date.

    OB. RIDICULOUS! Figures!!!!! HMMPH!

She leaves and I am fuming! Why did she think that having that voucher entitled her to free money?

That's why coupons have the small print about only being worth 1/20 of a cent. People were trying to trade them in for cash without buying the product.

Book tokens are a fairly common thing over here in the UK - no idea about the US etc. It's a system when you can buy a gift voucher that is specifically for the purpose of redeeming for books in any partiicpating retail outlet. It tends to mean that children won't spend their birthday money on sweets (candy), floozies, or beer.

                Basically . . . a gift card.

And why is it, whenever a coupon or sale or whatever is being offered and it's so simple . . . so SIMPLE to understand . . . yet SCs have to mangle, twist, obliterate it beyond recognition to make it work for them? It's like trying to force a square peg in a round hole . . . It must be one of those things in the SC job description. . .
This area is left blank for a reason.

Indeed I do. I still think that they wasted the money I gave them. Children today, eh?

I had a customer try to buy $1.98 worth of tooth paste, and wanted to use 2 $1 coupons. The registers won't let us do that. She thought it was rather rediculous that I wouldnn't let her buy 2 tubes of toothpaste for -2 cents.

Yeah, but it won't stop them from using 'em for porn if they're creative.
