A tip the scanner is finicky so don't swipe it too fast. Do it steady and slow. Too fast the scanner cannot read all the magnetic strip and it cancels the procedure. I rarely have problems but when I do I pulled it through the slot too fast and usually at an angle.

Certain debit, credit machines will lock out the card if you try to swipe it several times in a row incorrectly. So be patient and swipe it slow and steady.

Hotel doors also act this way btw as do many security card reader devices.

yeah, I'd like $50 of groceries for $10?

It never fazes me when people take $40 out, state they have $50 in the account, and then try to buy $45-50 of groceries. Any transaction is instantaneous (be it with an ATM, at a retail kiosk, et al.), if they didn't realize that...

What I find most dissapointing is that we have instructions right next to the machine that tell customers to not swipe their card until the sale is all run up, and that if they wish to process their debit as credit to press cancel and hand the card to the cashier.

...but do any of them read it? No, of course not. Granted, the top three buttons (Debit, Credit, EBT) don't do a darn thing, either, but that's probably because the store buys the cheapest/oldest equipment possible.

*Yes, I'm fully away of what that sounded like, and get your minds out of the gutter, people! It's getting crowded in here as it is.
off topic: what are you doing all the way up there in the gutter? It is lovely and cozy and warm down here in the sewer.
on topic: I am so glad I do not have to deal with taking credit/debit cards, we tried implementing them and had nothing but trouble with them.

Whenever that happens to me, it's usually during a busy period. This one woman's card was declined (ran it twice), then another was declined, then another...she went through 5 cards. By this time, of course, the phone is ringing and customers are getting huffy for waiting in line. Finally she just ended up paying with cash....something I suggested in the first place,
