That happened one year at the supermarket, when Christmas Eve fell on a Sunday and a swarm of locusts, sorry, customers, charged in the moment the store was open and decimated the meat and vegetable sections. By lunchtime, there were no birds left, not even chickens or geese and no vegetables at all. Cue dozens of SCs whining when they rolled in after lunch and found that there was no Christmas food left.

I got two turkey's from the same place, one the week before Thanksgiving and one the Monday before. The one I got the Monday before is chilling in the big freezer, might take it out soon to have as pre-Christmas dinner.

Love turkey, don't like the hassle in cooking it for 3-5 hours, then carving it, then everyone eats for what amounts to a ten minute meal.
Eh, one day I'll have something useful here. Until then, have a cookie or two.

I will admit that I under planned one Thanksgiving and was a few pounds of turkey short given the number of people coming to my place. I was also surprised that there were no turkeys of any kind to be had. I also admitted my poor planning, gave the meat counter guy a laugh, and bought a ham....which we then fried...which is now a tradition and no one really eats the fried turkey until all the fried ham is gone.

Last year, on Christmas Day, Mom discovered she didn't have something she needed to do some of her baking. She wanted to send me off to the store (since they were open, the poor bastards) to get what she needed.

I refused to do so. Mom attempted to guilt-trip me into doing it (something she can be good at doing), despite my protests that I "didn't want to justify corporate screwing people out of their holiday." I was about to go ahead and do it anyway when Mom gave in and said I was right.

She got one more guilt-shot in by noting that she wouldn't be able to make some sweet treat she'd promised me, but I pointed out "We've got plenty of cookies and whatnot in the house, Mom. I'll live."

So, when I was a kid my dad and his friends (not family, lol!) had a super awesome tradition for Thanksgiving and New Years! We all went camping. Up somewhere in the mountains, where you have to know the turn because there is no marking, just a mud/dirt road. Since we all just had RVs of varying size, everyone made one side dish. One turkey was deep fried. Properly, not the way which produces a fire-ball. It was great. And you know what? If someone forgot something, the nearest store was very far away (think here? Zoom out, there's not much around) , so we just did without, and the world never came to an end.

If I was to have any tradition, I would like to restart that one. At the time there was no cell service there, so we were really cut off from stress, and we never had to deal with Black Friday.

You must be in a warmer climate than I am, notalwaysright. It's rather difficult to get to the more remote mountain areas this time of year. They keep Vail Pass and some of the other routes to ski destinations pretty well plowed, and there are lower-elevation RV parks open for "four season" campers, but if you want to camp on a backwoods road somewhere, you will need a 4WD and snowshoes.
