If you rent Nightwatch, you gotta play the flipside in the original Russian--whoever performed the subtitles (notice my choice of words) did a brilliant job!

Where I work we have one showing a week of one film that is subtitled for the hard of hearing (people like me). But even though the film is in English and they are very discrete subtitles, we get complaints.

We don't show a lot of non-English language films, since it is a very family-oriented cinema in a small town, so we don't generally have that problem. I can only think of two films while I've worked there and one of those was Apocalypto.

On the subject of DVDs it really irritates me when they don't have hard of hearing subtitles - these days I check before I buy and if it doesn't, I don't buy.

There are a lot of DVDs released with really poor subtitling.

I've watched a lot of movies in English with the subtitles on because it was at a party, and sometimes people can get just a little too loud in the background to hear the dialogue, so you have to turn on subtitles for it to be an enjoyable experience.

Some films have full captioning, not just subtitling on their movies. That means that they include sound effects and musical cues with the actual subtitles.

Others barely manage to get the actual dialogue right. If you want to see a particularly craptacular example of subtitling, check out Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure.

I went to see pan's lab in theatres with the boyfriend. I'm surprised he enjoyed it as much as he did. We always have to watch the anime dubbed because he can't read as fast as I can. And he always has to have control of channel changing. I zip right through the descriptions before he has a chance to read them (all this in the hope that we don't have to watch ANOTHER episode of Star Trek Voyager, I like next gen, but voyager sucks ass).

Sound effects are usually pretty funny when captioned/subtitled.

I wish more DVDs would have lyrics to soundtracks subtitled. But a few years ago I was stuck with videos that had none, so I guess I shouldn't complain.

I really must watch Pan's Labyrinth, I keep hearing so much good stuff about it.
