So, today I dealt with my first sucky customer worth writing about since I started at the gas station, and my brain is still hurting five hours later.
Guy comes in and pays for a pack of cigarettes, mostly with cash and about three bucks with his debit. As he's paying he tells me that for some reason when he comes in at night and does the same thing that he gets charged a buck each time. He wants to know why.
The first thought that comes to mind is that he's seriously cracked, but I try to get some more information out of him.
And his story changes. No surprise.
This time he's saying that he gets charged for using the ATM that we have in the store. I asked him if his account is with the bank who owns the ATM. It isn't, and I explain to him that people using the machine with debit cards from different banks will be charged for each transaction, and that it states as much whenever they actually use the thing - a fee for using the ATM taken right off the top, as well as whatever his bank charges him.
Oh, no, I must not be understanding him correctly. Despite the fact that I confirmed that he was then talking about the ATM.
Back he goes to the story about the POS machines charging him that buck each time and that it's only at night. I told him that it is impossible for it to only happen at night because there aren't any changes to the programming between night and day for our registers or POS units, and that he would want to take it up with his bank if he's seeing the charge on his bank statement. Again he tries to say that it only happens at night and starts getting angry at me.
I explained to him that I know that some stores do have a minimum amount you have to spend via POS so you don't get an additional charge, but that our store/station isn't one of them.
Once he realized that I wasn't going to budge he left, hollering about how the store is ripping him off and that he's going to speak to my manager the next day. Funny thing is that my manager was right behind me during the whole thing so it's not like the guy is going to get very far. My manager shook his head, said the guy wouldn't get very far with him anyway, and agreed that the guy was cracked.
I'm still trying to figure out if there are any stores in this city that might have their POS set up to charge differently at night, but that just sounds like too much work. And considering that I've been in here late at night to buy something, using a similar manner of payment, I know the guy is full of crap but probably thought that because I was new that I'd fall for whatever he was trying to pull.
