I don't know if this really qualifies for a tinfoil hat, but the stupidity is pretty unbelievable. Here's a call I received yesterday while covering the switchboard for the operator's lunch break:
Me: Good afternoon, *company name*
*dead air for about 5 seconds*
Idiot: Hello?
Me: Hello?
Idiot: Is this a machine?
Me: No, this is the operator.
Idiot: Oh.....
He told me who he was looking for & I directed his phone call to that person.
When the operator came back from lunch, I told her about it. She said I should have told him 'Yes it is, how may I help you?' That would have thrown him for a loop.
