  • Pre-op/Post-op Closing times

I think retail stores and restaurants should have two closing times instead of one. The first closing time customers can't enter the building from outside but there are still the ones inside. The second closing time there should be absolutely nobody in the building. When the Post-op closing time strikes the computer systems shuts down, the lights turn off, Managers and Loss Prevention escorts the remaining people out the doors immediately, waiters, waitresses, management enters the dining area where the customers are still sitting and quickly encourages the customers to pay their bill or they will call the cops for tresspassing. I think the Post-op time should be 20 minutes after the pre-op times example...

    Opening time 8:00am Pre-op closing time 9:40pm Post-op closing time 10:00pm
Providing Excellent customer service and Filtering out nonsense people.

You know, I love the idea, but you have to consider that these are people who can't figure out a closing time when there's only one of them. Consider how it would be if there's two.

From an employee's point of view I can understand why this would be sound like a solution . . .from a reality stand point - It wouldn't work.

Most resturants have a similar concept in place - the kitchen closes at a set time - and in some states alcohool cannot be served after a specific time - no food no drink people will leave.

I have been in stores where they will announce that they are closing in such and such amount of time and even some that will tell you their registars will be turned off - yet people don't pay attention to that - they are lost in their own little world and don't catch on.

Not all stores will agree to such a concept - they will leave things the way they are now. (The almighty dollar being more important than a replacable employee's happiness) People will stop going to the buisness that they don't find helpful. (clearing someone out of a dining area or being escorted out of a store wouldn't come across as helpful)

At the garden centre, we used to not let people in after 5 minutes to closing time; but we still ended up having to practically throw people out sometimes as late as 20 minutes after closing time so that we could all go home; cuz we couldn't leave til the poor girl on the front till had cashed up... and while there were dickheads, sorry, I mean customers, in the store, she wasn't allowed to do so.

I've wanted to do this at my work. I would love it if the registers shut off at 10:15, but the managers are far too money hungry to allow that. They'll let people browse until 10:30 and not say a single word to them about the store being closed.

Or maybe every place could have one of those loudspeaker systems "20 minutes to close, please pay your bills now", "20 minutes to close, our doors will be locked now and customers will only be let out, not in".......

Of course I worked at a gym w/ a loudspeaker system and did one of those types of things at 30 min, 20 min, 15, 10, 5, and 0 minutes to close and STILL had to chase people out of the gym......... it's freaking 11:00 at night - GO HOME & GO TO BED! ( I stay up well past 11, but I don't exercise at 11:00 at night....)

I came into this thread with a MUCH different expectation than I found

I cannot stand people who do not leave... Look, I don't care that YOU cannot find anything better to do with your free time, but at that point you'tr cutting into MY free time, which makes me want to cut... YOU.

Our gallery had roughly that idea, we had a "last entry" time posted, no one was able to enter the gallery after 30 minutes before closing.

It meant that we were mostly cleared out by the time we shut down, we were paid for 30 minutes after that.

Thats a much better idea then my Closing Time vs Brutal Flogging With Nerf Bats Time.

                    Less satisfying though....

I used to work for one of the local Wendy's locations. By the way, my view of working fast food after that year of hell is that I'd have to be desparately unemployed and down to my last few dollars before I'd consider taking another job in fast food. I always hated those last minute stragglers who insisted on sitting in the dining room to eat their food. I quickly learned to conveniently make sure the doors were locked somewhere between 10 minutes to 5 minutes till dining room close. In fact, I'd follow behind every customer exiting the building during that time frame just to make sure the door locked behind them.

I worked for several years at a convenience store which closed at midnight. It was a small town with little to offer. We sold beer, so you'd constantly have people wanting to pop in at the last minute because they didn't want to drive to the other side of town where the 24-hour store was still open. However, I had the execution of closing procedures down to an art. Within the last half hour, I'd make a quick round between customers to check outside trash, empty the squeegee buckets, bring in squeegees, and lock all outside cabinets and equipment. Within the final five minutes, I would shut off the canopy lights and half the inside lights, and I'd lock the doors. Gas customers who needed to pay for what they pumped were the only customers I'd allow entry, and everyone wanting out had to wait until I unlocked the door to let them out. Most everyone seemed to understand my way of closing the store since I was the only attendant on duty at that time of night. Then, once everyone was gone, I'd pull my car right up to the door so that I didn't have to cross the parking lot in the dark, then turn off the remaining outside lights. I'd close my drawer, count my money, and everything else that was left. It never failed that on weekends, you'd still have drunks banging on the doors wanting in even though the lights were off and all other conditions indicated that we were obviously closed for the night. I even had one guy who tried to talk me into reopening the store as I was leaving because he was about out of gas and wanted to get some beer while he was at it. I was already in my car and had it started when he pulled up. I calmly explained that the 24-hour store was just up the road, and so he could get his stuff there. Of course, he didn't like that answer because he didn't want to drive across town, but I drove off before he could say much more. Then, I circled the block and drove through the parking lot just to make sure he did leave. My attitude was that I patiently waited on the customers and catered to their whims within reason for the other 7.5 hours of the shift or whatever, so it was my way or the highway that last half hour before closing. Luckily, my manager supported me if someone complained because I wouldn't let them in for that last minute purchase.

As far as letting customers out and not in....to thwart the ones you know will try to sneak in the exit door, why not a low-voltage shock that works similar to the spike strips at car rental/garage exits; as long as you're moving in the proper direction you're fine, but the second you try to back up...
