I hate it when people bring their goods up to the till and then just wander off to look at other stuff. If you haven't finished looking around, don't join the till queue! You are holding me up and holding the queue up and the queue are going to be grumpy and miserable with me.

It's a very simple concept. Enter the store, do all your shopping, then come to the register. If you remember something you should have gotten, if it's not within 10 steps, please finish the transaction first and then go and look for your crap while I check other people out.
I also HATE it when people push their cart up to the register, go off to get one more thing, and someone else comes up, I start checking them out, and the original person comes back all offended because "I was just going a few feet away to get a drink!"

Makes me crazy when they'll balance a basket full of items and a couple more on the END of the (EXPRESS) register, and then ask, "I'm gonna leave this stuff here; is that ok?"
No, you ass. It's not.
And then they'll wander off before you can formulate a not-rude answer.

That is one of my pet peeves as well. However, we do encourage customers to give us things they plan to buy, so they can look around some more and spend more money! hahahaha - just kidding, but we'll take their clothes, and put them neatly on the back counter with a "customer stilll shopping" sign so no one puts it back...but there are always some who will just dump their stuff anywhere near the register, not say a word, and then get pissy when they find its been put back on the floor. We put back constantly, so we aren't there all night, and if we can't tell you left it there to buy, back it goes.
Even if were are busy, all they have to do is say "can i leave these here while i look some more?" no problem, but if they don't say anything, we have no way of knowing who put stuff there, much less that a customer wants it!

I get some walk in customers at my hotel who all the sudden have to go to the restroom as I am checking them in. Without fail, another customer will come in while they are in the restroom. I stall for a minute, hoping the original customer will return, but 9/10 times, they are in the restroom for a while. So I have to "X" out of the screen and deal with the customer standing in front of me. Then the original customer will come back to the desk upset that I have to ask for their information again.

My solution is simple, if they aren't ready to finish the transaction by the time another customer arrives, they loose their place in line. I'm too busy to hold up the line for some clueless halfwit who doesn't know how to shop. I let the other customers now waiting in line decide how generous they want to be in letting the idiots have their former place in line. Problem solved as far as I'm concerned. If they want to throw a fit, I give them the option to wait in line anyway or go elsewhere. Their lack of planning is not my emergency. I figure that the worst they can do is complain to the manager, and the manager generally sides with the clerks in regard to such matters, anyway. I happily give them the complaint hotline in such situations because they always prove themselves to be as stupid as I told the manager they were. It's not like I'm actually being rude by expecting them to have their head on their shoulders like the intelligent human beings they believe themselves to be.
After all, I still follow through with the whole, "Hi! How are you?" routine without getting rude about it.The Borg wouldn't know fun if they assimilated an amusement park. -- B'Elanna Torres, Star Trek: Voyager

Omg this bugs the heck out of me too! People LOVE to do this to me and i just want to scream at them NOT to come near the register till they're ready to check out. When they walk off i try to wait until they get back, but inevitably someone will always come over and want to be checked out...i swear it does not matter how slow business is. I could have had no customers for an hour, and as soon as i get someone wandering away during the transaction, someone else comes along. It's like they can smell that this is not a good time.
So quite frankly, if these wanderers come back and get all bent out of shape cause i'm helping someone else now too bad for them. You don't wander off like a bored two year old in the middle of a transaction...especially if i have a line full of people, because you WILL have to wait again. What really annoys me are the ones that don't even bother to tell me they're going to go look at something, they just wander off. Look people, if you get in line and then see something you wanna look at closer, do what i do, get the hell out of the line, go look, and come back. How hard of a concept is that?Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.

How's that Jeff Foxworthy routine about that go...'If they're having that much trouble shopping, then I feel I should help them! Let's see, they need a word jumbo, and some candy bars, and a lighter, and...'Because as we all know, on the Internet all men are men, all women are men and all children are FBI agents.

At the gas station, people would walk in, grab a 6 pack of beer, lug it onto the counter, then walk around, grab a pop and some chips, throw that onto the counter as well, then go to the bathroom (why not the bathroom in the first place, I don't know!), and then proceed to FINALLY pay for everything.
Of course, within those minutes, other customers who weren't stupid and knew what they wanted would come in and I'd have to push Stupid Customers' stuff aside for them.

Some days I want to kiss the person who thought to put a 'suspend transaction' button on the registers where I work. It prints out a nice little ticket that I can just set aside, then scan again to bring the transaction back up.
MOST of the time, customers understand the "I paused while you were gone, please wait while it calls your transaction up", but every once in a while, we get a SC that starts complaining about how we didn't wait for them to come back. It's little things that make the difference between 'enjoyable', 'tolerable', and 'gimme a spoon, I'm digging an escape tunnel'.

Btw, i love the suspend transaction button on our registers too. I'm guessing we work for the same company. But my store is getting new registers that will let us do ANYTHING right in the middle of a transaction without having to suspend the transaction and then pull it back up.Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.

I was at the supermarket last night and the woman in the line in front of me left her cart and young (5ish) son with his PSP so she could get something. While she was away (at least 5 min) the cashier became free so I slipped past and started to unload my cart. Eventually this woman came back and started having a go at me for jumping the line. I tried to ignore her but she was really shrill, so I told her to shut up or sod off.
She didn't look to happy, but she did shut up.
