I hate that. It's even worse in a field where there are thousands of possible combinations of options.

    I want a computer.

Certainly sir, what kind of computer do you want/need (pulling out my price sheets)

    A computer that does things

<twitch>What kinds of things do you need the computer to do?

In that case they will need a large monitor and an 800 GB RAID-5 Disk array.

(Yonge Street)My first guess too... World's longest street, I think?
There is a street here in Utah, USA called State Street. It starts at the state capital and travels north south. It goes from Salt lake city, Utah south forever until it hits a mountain, and then it continues on the other side of the mountainand goes from Lehi, Utah until Springville, Utah which is in the southern part of Utah valley. This Street traverses almost two entire counties and over 45 miles(75 Kilometers) long.

Yonge Street goes about 1400 Km, if memory serves - huge distance across Canadaland. I wore out a pair of socks on the small stretch where I found myself.

We sure know how to build 'em here, eh? Longest street, biggest mall, longest costline. . . ok, I know we didn't build the last one, but still Go Canada!!!

I get the "I'd like to get a refill, I don't know my rx #, I don't know the name of the script, I don't know what I use it for. It's a little white pill."

Nevermind that these guys are on like, 12 maintenance meds, several of which can be described as "little white pills."
Heck, 70% of my pill stock can be described that way......

                "I'm here for a prescription"

Yeah, I figured, this is a pharmacy and all, now, how bout' a last name?

And yet I sell several of those every day. A woman called me today wanting a laptop that would run Adobe Photoshop Premiere for her and a flight simulator for her husband. She was curious about the $399 special we had (it's a glorified typewriter, and a slow one at that). I told her it wouldn't do what she wanted it to and that the least expensive I had that would work was $579. She didn't like that. She kept asking me questions about the $399 computer, hoping that I would finally cave in and tell her that, yes, it will work. She called three times, and we had the same conversation each time.

A few hours later she came in. I showed her the paperweight laptop she wanted and even demonstrated how slow it was at a simple Excel spreadsheet while explaining that Adobe required much more than that. I finally told her it would work, but it would work very slowly, that her husband's simulator would be choppy at best, and that she would be disappointed with it. She still bought it. I'm waiting for the return, of course accompanied by accusations against me that I lied to her and a promise to never again shop at a store with such horrible service.

                  There is no escape.

Had that happen to me. Woman wanted a computer to run powerpoint for herself and Evercrack for her husband. It was going to be a surprise for his birthday.

The problem? She wanted to buy our $500 celeron based computer. and I wanted to sell her the $900 Athlon based computer. She wanted none of that. Back and forth explaining the minimal requirements of Evercrack from the website, showing how slow it would be. Finally she asked if I buy the cheap computer, couldn't it be upgraded to run Evercrack?

Yes, yes it could. You'd spend $500 for the computer, which we would not be responsible if it didn't run a certain software package since you informed us of the software you wished to run and ignored our recomendations, $200 for the video card upgrade, $60 for the memory, $250 for a Pentium 4 CPU, $150 for the labor totalling $1160 -or- you could buy the pre-packaged, Gamer ready $900 Athlon PC and not worry about it.

She shut up and bought the $900 Athlon.
