Last night during my overnight shift (it was around 11:15-11:30PMish), I had a customer (white male, 40s, bald, w/ tattoos on arms) who tried to buy the following:
$100 American Express Gift Card
$100 American Express Gift Card
Box of Aquafresh tooth whitening kit (worth about $30-$40)
20 oz bottle of Pepsi (no biggie but just to make the list complete)
Well, seeing this, I asked the customer how he wished to pay for it, and I saw a checkbook in his hand. Well, needless to say I was seeing more red flags than China, especially when the customer got all fidgety and was asking me if I had a problem with checks. I told him that yes, I have a big problem with someone coming overnight buying $200 worth of gift cards (and these were the kind with $6 fees on top of each one too) with a check, especially one with a low number #1090. So at first I told him he'd have to come back during the day when there's a manger on duty to get the gift cards, and only get the tooth whitening kit and Pepsi for now.
Well, as luck would have it, this individual overplayed his hand and wanted two cartons of Marlboros as well. So, basically I told him that could not do his order at all now and told him to leave. Now, had I known how to do it w/o looking too suspicious, I was about ready to call the police to see if his ID/check was on a bad check watch list or something. After this individual left, I called our other 24 hour store in this town to alert the overnight checker there, and guess what? He tried that same stunt there first!! All I can say is, I hope this guy gets caught soon and is thrown in jail where he belongs.
I couldn't think of anywhere else to put this topic, cuz this guy wasn't a SC. He was just a downright THIEF.
