to make something vanish/disappear. Scary thing was is I didn't even have to think that deeply about it... It just came to mind that fast. I guess my little obsession with the series has paid off!
My first spell to come to mind would be Avada Kedavra. Not just the fact that it creates a cool green light and um, kills people, but I like the way it rolls off the tongue. XD

      Oh, and here's an icon:

And my response to such a situation:

And as for random chanting, how bout this?

      Govinda jaya jaya
      Gopala jaya jaya Radha-ramanahari
      Gavinda jaya jaya
      Nrsingadeva jaya nrsingadeva

      Gaura gaura gaura hari
      Prabhupda govindam

A shiny new donkey to the person who can get the reference. Note; I didn't study said religion; I just like weird rock bands. XD

I did something similar. I disdained HP, not because of the witchcraft, but because it was The In Thing.
Same here. I was sick to death of hearing Harry Potter this and Harry Potter that. The only reason I ever read the first book was because people on a forum I trusted to not be stupid said it was pretty decent, and I got a used copy for pretty cheap.

I also have never seen any of the Jurassic Park movies, drank a Starbucks coffee drink, watch "American Idol" (except for once for the dreadful rejects you see in the first show, which was hilarious), watch any CSI show, or see Grey's Anatomy. And frankly, my life seems just fine and I haven't suffered devastating trauma to my physical health or social life because of any of this.
JP: The books are good, the first movie is pretty decent, and the acting is quite good.
Starbucks: I don't drink coffee at all, and most Sb afficianados I've run into are mindless consumerist zombies who will buy anything the tv tells them is cool, like Starbucks coffee and Krispee Kreme donuts (ugh, are those things nasty!)
AI: The rejects shows are a real treat. The regular show does nothing for me.
CSI: As a fan of real forensics shows, this one just annoys me with the bad info on how the system really works.
GA: Never seen it. Haven't actually watched tv for months.

As far as "In" things go, I've either been doing whatever is popular for the last year, at least (this happens with fashion all the time... I wore black at school, then everybody started wearing black 2 years later... I chose certain colors for my faire garb and the next season a whole household was using those colors, so I changed to new colors, and a different household had them the year after!... I adopted eye-searing pink years ago, and it seems to be all the rage, now... same thing with unicorns in the '80s and butterflies more recently... I like being able to find new items to add to my collection, but it annoys me that it's no longer really special that I collect that thing) or it is something I never have and never will be interested in.

        But...but...but...Grissom's HOT!!!!!!!!!!
Really, he does nothing for me, and I spent a whole day in his presense, more or less. He's actually pretty cool. Marg Helgenberger, on the other hand, is a little vapid.

What's a Grissom? And something tells me even if I knew, he still wouldn't do a thing for me. You know, that whole flaming heterosexual thing and all......
          Fair enough.

I only watch CSI for the scientific aspects, anyway.

          • I never read Harry Potter becasue it was the 'in thing' but becasue I liked the concept of the book. I was a kid when the first one came out so I've sort of grown up with them, and want to see how the story ends.

I've never deliberately done the in thing, or deliberately avoided it either. I've always just kind of gone my own way, done what interests me and ignored what doesn't, and feel quite surprised and odd when what I am doing happens to coincide with the in thing,

If I would've known you would LIKE the show, I would've had you watch it many years ago. I thought you'd get icked out.

I think the only "in" thing I ever did was with regards to games; Pogs, Pokémon, Yu-Gi-Oh!.. no World of Warcraft yet, though. Only got ragged on by students and co-workers, though.

I'm pretty much the same way. I think avoiding something *just because* it is the in thing isn't a lot better than jumping on its bandwagon because it is the in thing. There have been a couple times that I got into something because it being the in thing brought it to my attention, but I still had the same basic reason I get into anything: it seemed interesting.

Only problem we ever had with Harry Potter in the theatres was kids who got more on the floor than in their mouths, and people staying through the whole credits for a 20 second scene, leaving us 10 minutes to clean a 400 seat theatre.
                      What what what?
Good thing I was going to go see it again anyway!

there was no 20 second scene after the credits... we stayed until after teh credits and there was nothing. unless out theater just didn't show it, which is unlikely.

                        • There has been one on the last two Pirates movies, bit there isn't one on Harry Potter (at least not the current one or the previous one).

                            • Here in the United States, some of us have enough awareness to realize that when a politician says "Save the children or protect the children, " we are about to lose something, for the sake of the children, of course. Let me give you an example. The state of Arizona recently had two bills on the ballot concerning a smoking ban. One of them was a total ban on smoking at all places of business, including not smoking within 20 feet of a door or window, etc. The other was a ban on smoking that excepted bars, and other places open only to adults. Because of the constant campaign to 'protect the chilxdren,' the voters, wishing to please the politicians, and to protect the children, voted in the full ban. Children are not allowed in bars!!!!! How can banning smoking where an adult should be able to make an adult decision that will not affect children in way, shape or form, protect any children? I am all for protecting children from harm, but I am also all for being able, as an adult to make a decision about whether I want to smoke in an adult environment or not. If I don't want to be around smoke, I can go to a bar that doesn't allow smoking. However, in Arizona, that option does not exist any longer. To protect a child, I have to give up an adult pleasure in a place that child will be forbidden to enter until he is 21 years old.

                              Comment

                              • I knew they had banned smoking in bars in a few cities, but now they have banned smoking statewide?

I'm a lifelong smoker, and I am very upset by this utter bullshit. I also voted against the smoking ban in restaurants in Florida (though I was in the minority).

Especially ridiculous is the fact that adults cannot engage in a legal activity within 20 feet of a bar that children won't be in....because it might harm the children.

                                Say what?

Now, in downtown Tempe, the only way to get further than 20 feet from a bar to smoke and still not be within 20 feet of any other place of business is to walk into the middle of the mofo'in street. Oh, now THAT'S brilliant!

Do my fellow Zonies not realize that if people can't smoke in bars and other adult businesses, they may be forced to go to, oh, I don't know....PARKS to smoke? You know, those grassy green areas that families with CHILDREN like to go?

Shit, the politicos might as well just pass a Smoking Prohibition, because frankly, there really is no place left for the smokers to go.

Which means of course that they are just going to light up wherever they are, even if it's near children, or sneak it in bathrooms (where children might be later) or smoke at home around (wait for it)....their children.

                                Stupid, stupid, stupid, and stupid.

And once again my beloved home state makes me roll my eyes.

I guess it's true that you CAN be in the sun too much!
