Just an update on the situation..... The company's insurance investigator interviewed both the manager and I yesterday, and took pictures of the store where the incident occurred. The manager and I did review the surveillance footage the following day to find the time indexes showing when jackass was in the store. Today, the district manager came in to review the footage and make copies. I'm not trained in spotting these sorts of things, but it really does look like he staged this. He came in the store just after I finished cleaning up the mess made when the little girl spilled her icee. I'd already put the mop and bucket back in the supply room by the time he entered the building. He was recorded walking around the area several times prior to the "fall." He had to have noticed that it was wet because other customers were recorded walking around to avoid the area. It even looks like he made one failed attempt to slip on the spot before he finally succeded. Like I said, that's just my own impression of how the footage appears. I'm not trained on spotting such trends, but the district manager made similar observations. We'll see what the experts have to say once they review the footage. Their word will be a determining factor, but I think I already know what the outcome will be based on what I've seen.

Here's another puzzle, maybe just my own curiosity, the wet floor sign was actually there near the door earlier in the day. It was clearly visible near the front door on the surveillance footage for that day. We generally always keep it near the entrance just because people track in messes all day long. Sometime later, it was moved. I didn't move it, and I don't know who did or why. It was in the office at the time the incident happened. Yes, I did take it for granted that the wet floor sign was there already because it usually always is. I should have checked to be sure, but oversights do happen. That's about the only guilt I feel over the situation that I didn't think to check for it. I was more concerned about the mess being a hazard because it was during our afternoon rush, and people were walking back and forth.

As for the comments about being unprofessional toward jackass, I understand the point, but I don't feel like I did anything wrong. I have no regrets about what I said. My conversations with customers were none of his concern even if they were about the incident, so I felt justified in speaking to them since I'm on friendly terms with most of them. He was clearly wrong for butting in to my conversations with customers at all, but most loudmouths are in such situations. Yes, waiting until later when he was gone would have been more appropriate, but I don't feel like I was in the wrong for speaking to customers about it. The only times I specifically addressed him were to tell him to step outside because he was being rude and beligerent. Regardless of professionalism, I felt justified in telling him what I said when addressing him. I was under no obligation or expectation to put up with his abusive attitude whether or not he was actually injured. Yes, I certainly understand the point that I could have handled it a little more gracefully by not commenting until later, but I held my tongue until he started getting out of hand. Even though I did lose my temper once he started running his mouth, I still think I handled it as well as could be expected with an insulting loudmouth standing right there trying to push and intimidate.
