  • You ever had one of these...?

When I use to work at Sears, I was one of the MCA Managers and I basically ran the Home Appliances and Bedding department. I would get people who would ask (most of the times they didn't) to open up the bedding sets. Depending on the price and what it was I would usually say yes. It never failed that I would get someone who opened it up, sprawled all the contents on either the floor ( ) or on one of the beds, take a long look at it, feel the sheets, make sure everything was there, say they wanted it, and then would take a new package off the shelf! Um....what was the point of you checking the other one then?

What ever happened to "you break it, you bought it?" The same thing should apply to "you dirty it, you bought it."

I've seen people do this with BBQs - then come back and complain because some small valve or part wasn't in the box (the new one not the one they checked).

Happens all the time, except usually they don't ask by me. You'll be straightening and suddenly you'll come across a package with all the packing material taken out and tossed all over and the item sitting stashed behind some other item.

This doesn't happen quite so much with bed sets as it does with other things--small appliances, for instance.

About a couple weeks ago I was stocking diapers off the truck and a woman came up to me with a dress shirt and tie set in a box and asked if she could have her husband try the shirt on. I told her it was okay, because she asked in that "potentially humongous pain in the ass" tone of voice, and because apparel would have to deal with repacking the thing if it didn't fit.

I remember many unhappy hours of having to do that when i worked at Kmart. First jobs suck.

I worked in that very department when I was at Sears, and that used to happen all the time! Few things drove me crazier!

OK, I can understand opening the package to make sure everything is there...but then what's the point of taking a different one? But if I just want to see how soft the sheets are...you can do that without pulling out the entire contents of the bag...

^That use to get me too. It's not rocket science. I can GUARANTEE you that 180 thread count sheets do not feel that good so there is no need for you to rip open the plastic to feel it. Oh and did I mention the package was plastic? As in if you ruin it, I can't even repackage it.

What kills me is that the people who feel they need to open the package and paw through it are usually the same people who feel they are above buying a set that has been opened and pawed through.

Neo, thats one of the things my mom taught me that sticks: NEVER buy sheets that are lower than 220 thread count.

I have a set of sateen-ish sheets at a 400+ tc, and damn it makes a difference.

Oh yeah...never ceases to amaze me that people want to rip open those cheap 180 thread count great price sheet sets. "Oh they are so thin!" they say. Yes. It's called 180 thread count. That's why they are great price @ 19.98 for all sizes. And thanks, because now the package is ruined.

I usually can patch those sets with packaging tape but then it looks stupid. Oh yeah. I hate it to bits when people rip open things that have ZIPPERS on them. Or when people see that an ink tag has been placed on the zipper to prevent them from opening it and they some how manage to rip and ruin the package anyway. (We ink tag the zippers on high quality stuff like Grace Designs or Everyday Luxe.)

Once I had a customer that did the very same thing you stated, Neo_classic. Took out everything out of a Ty Pennington bed set and then asked for new one to buy. I asked her politely to please take the set that she had made me take out of the package. She said no. But then I said: "Well, you know that this set has everything in it because we took everything out to show you. We can't guarantee that the new set will have everything. We don't want you to have to make an extra trip to exchange it." She then agreed with me. Yay for logic!

I also don't like it when customers open up packages of underwear to see how big they are and the leave the undies lying around. Could you at least stuff it back into the package like everyone else? I was in boys the other day and someone opened up a dress shirt, the kind that are in the hanging plastic type bags and spread it completely out on the FLOOR and left the empty package on the shelf. Pissed me off so much. We have so many missing pieces because people like to rip open packages of socks, undies, etc in kids department and leave the pieces lying around. Gaaah!

At first we use to try to tape them back as well but a.) like you said it looked really stupid and b.) no one would buy it. I figure b were the same people who rip open the packages anyway. So then I would have to mark them down and put them in the clearance bin at about 20-50% off.

I love those. It irritates me that most people are that stupid, and that prices in general have to compensate for the markdown (because people are daft), but when I can get a perfectly good high quality sheet set for cheap just because someone's pawed through it? Hey, cool! I have to wash the chemicals out of the fabric anyway!
