...*sighs* *hits self in head with brick* *types up phone call*
Okay, I admit that at first I wasn't really paying attention to this lady, because today is the deadline for a certain bit of our news to be included so I've been fielding this question a lot and it's become automatic, I've not even considered the action. But then this one had to add a comment that jolted me back to reality.
Me: "Newsroom."
Lady: "Yes, I have a form here, and the deadline is 5 today, can I fax it in or do I have to bring it by?"
Me: "You can fax it in."
Lady: "And what's the number?"
Me: *recites number*
Lady: "So, the one on the form?"
*SCREECH*
I actually said "Buh?"
Me: "Ma'am?"
Lady: "I should use the fax number on the form."
Me: "Uhh...yes ma'am."
Lady: "And should I make it to the attention of any department?"
THE FORM HAS THE NAME OF THE DEPARTMENT RIGHT ON TOP OF IT.
Me: "No...no, it's fine."
Lady: "Okay, thank you!"
Me: *hangs up* "WHAT??"
Just to be sure I wasn't the crazy one, I pulled one of the forms and looked at it. RIGHT at the top, under the name of the department, is "You may fax this form to *number* by 5 p.m. Wednesday for inclusion in Saturday's paper." So EVERYONE who has called me today to ask IF THEY CAN FAX IT has that information GLARING them in the face, and missed it utterly or, like this woman, didn't understand third-grade English.
Even when they READ signs, they still don't understand them...
