I used to check the back of each credit card for the signature & IF I couldn't make it out then I'd ask for ID. I can't tell you how many times I'd get people who when I couldn't make out the ID would raise a fuss INSISTING that THEY could see their signature just fine & why I couldn't?
Like I'm supposed to make out a signature so faded that for all intent & purposes it wasn't there at all or cards so old that the signature strip wasn't on it. & they could see the signature? Yeah, right.

Wait. Vermont doesn't have photos on their IDs? What's the point of that? If you're buying alcohol, why even bother checking ID, since you don't know if it's the same person. Let alone confirming ID for checks, CCs, etc. Isn't there a lot of fraud with getting a job or a loan (using someone else's ID & info) or getting pulled over (cops won't know you have warrants, you have someone else's ID). Just seems silly, if you ask me.
They do picture IDs for anyone who wants one, but it's still optional here...but if you want to buy alcohol, you have to have the picture ID. I also seem to remember it not being an issue for writing checks; most places had courtesy cards or just took your license without photo.

I have had a few people rather me void out the sale than show their ID, one lady said "I dont even know what you need to see!" with arm-flinging and everything. I repeated calmly: ID. Driver License. I had a few try and hand me a Visa or something as ID.

I can't remember if I posted about the woman who tried to use her 'dads' Sears card. If I haven't I'll post it.

          Personal rule when I work:
If it's a credit card, I check the name.
If the name and your face doesn't match your membership card, you're not using it.
If you have no pic on your membership card, I will see your drivers license.
If you have no photo id, you better have a debit with a pin number or cash, because I am not accepting your card.

My managers seriously love me for it.

Actually, it merely counts as unsigned, and must be signed before it can be used. A person destroying it at anything other than the request of the CC company or the authorized card holder counts as destruction of property. That's bad.

                Had this one today....

Card was signed "PHOTO ID REQUIRED" alongside the actual signature. Customer showed photo ID and wrote "PHOTO ID REQUIRED" next to his actual signature on the slip.

Not my card, you won't! And my card is valid, because it IS signed, plus I also have "See ID" printed on it. Most of the places I have used it have asked for ID, but many haven't. I don't fault the grocery store because the cardholder swipes the card himself, so the cashier never actually sees the card. (Well that, and also because most of the time when I am getting groceries it's the same cashier, and we know each other) Ditto the local K-Mart.

Whenever I get a "See ID" or some variant thereof on a customer's card, I walk up to them, showing the back of the card that says "See ID" or whatever, smile, and say, "I'm sorry, I'm one of those weird people that follow instructions." I have had very few people fight me on this one. Generally, they just laugh, or even thank me.

I never sign my cards, I just put See ID! on them, and, if there's space, a picture of a moose in permanent ink. A crafty thief can forge my signature, but it takes a true master to forge my ID.

it's when they don't bother checking the signature and asking for ID instead.
You will see a lot of that during the holiday season. It doesn't bother me. I believe that many stores may have policies around this. I have noticed sinced Thanksgiving (in the U.S.) I even get asked for my ID at store I normally shop at by clerks I see almost every day. I know they are doing their job, it is not a big deal, so I don't understand why people get upset by showing their id.

I have a perfect case where checking ID and signatures is a very good thing to do.

My boyfriend and a friend of his went out to eat one night. They had seperate checks, and both paid with their debit cards. They both bank at the same place, so the debit cards look the same. The waitress mixes up the cards and gives my boyfriend his friend's card and vice versa. They didn't notice. They both used the cards for about three days until my boyfriend went to buy a pair of shoes or something and the associate asked for an ID and then informed him that his name was not the name on the card. If no one had checked, who knows how long they would have been using each other's cards!
"What size can I get you, ma'am?"
                          "Red."
"Okay...I'll check the red for you, but what size do you need?"
                          "RED!"
                          "..."

when it comes to me checking peoples IDs i just check to see if i can see their sig. and if i t says check ID then i 4 sure check it.
i get 2 diffrent kinds of responses, the ass hat, or the amazed thankful person.
the ass hat usually just bitches and i tell him i wont give him his food till i see ID, then when he finally hands it to me i tell just tell him its for his own safety.
the thankful people usually go on and on how they are amazed cuz no one ever checks them, and pretty much make me out as some kind of CC hero.

but i always check, ever since that time i got that stolen card back when i worked at Stupid Store.
