What did that shelf do to you?

Okay, I'm not sure what is up with people the past couple of weeks, but we have had some real odd ones at our store. I thought I should share them.

I hate your shelf

I'm not sure what to make of this one, but we had a girl walk by our store, look in at one of the shelfs. Nothing odd about that, until she proceeded to extend her middle figure and point it towards the shelf. She then continued on her way
Now I know sometimes inanimate objects can piss you off, but I'm pretty sure the shelf had done nothing to her.

a brown shoe

I had a woman come in and look at shoes. She had a shoe in her hand so I offered to get her size. She then asked me for "any brown sale shoe" and told me her size.
I went into the back and found the shoe she had been holding. (it was the only sale one I had in her size) I brought it out thinking, well at least I found one, and it was one she looked interested in. When I show it to her she proceeds to look at it, say "not that one, I want one of these two." at points to a couple of shoes. She hands me the box and walks out.
This is one of my pet peeves. She was not specific, she said "any brown sale shoe", I found one.

why can't i have a refund

I had a lady complain because she wanted a refund because the shoes hurt her feet, and I refused to give it to her. (it should be noted that she didn't try on the shoe before buying it) Our policy is if it's been worn and are not resaleble, you get an exchange or store credit only. (which I think is very reasonable.)
I looked at the shoes and they were terrible condition for only wearing them one day. She told me she had worn them to work and they were "soooo uncomfortable" she thought our policy was stupid because "how I am suppose to know if there comfortable if I don't wear them to work."
Now lets see, first of all, this is why we try shoes on. Second of all, if you are unsure, try wearing them around the house first so you can return them. (which we tell every customer.)

To the waitstaff at the wedding I attended. I know you were just doing your job, and I do appeciate the effort. But I think you were a little overeager to get things cleaned up.
I only went for a cigarette, I had left some of my things at the table. I didn't expect to return and find that you had removed all my eating utensils as well as my wine and water glasses removed from my seat.

I have more stories, but right now I'm tired. I plan to post more tomorrow

Actually there might be a reason for this. I'm not trying to offend people on the boards who cater weddings but some are pretty tricky. You've got a wedding where the family pays for all the drinks the guests have, so everytime someone gets up from the table you clear it off and they have to go to get another drink.

Not saying that's what it was, but it is a problem I've heard about before.

Are you sure your shelf did nothing to offend her? I've heard that your shelf is quite the night owl, and hits the discos like it were still in style. Maybe they hooked up the night prior...? And the shelf didn't treat her right? Or they had an argument over which is Travolta's best movie? She said Saturday Night Fever, the shelf said... Battlefield Earth?

You've got a wedding where the family pays for all the drinks the guests have, so everytime someone gets up from the table you clear it off and they have to go to get another drink.

See, that would have made sense to me. But the problem is I wasn't drinking, as I had to work the following morning. What they took away was my water glass, and I had to ask for another one.

They had been doing this all night. I was afraid to put my fork down because they would swoop in and grab your plate away.

Actually I have one to comment on here as well. I don't know if it would have made a difference, but I was always taught that in fine dining if you get up and leave your seat to place your utensils (usually fork and knife) on your plate and make an x with them to indicate that you are not finished with it. Not sure how many people know this or would pay attention to it, but this could be one thing to try once

Thanks for the advice, I'll have to remember that. Unfortunatly I don't think it would have helped in this situation. Maybe it will help if I explained it a little better.

Basically, it was served buffet style and we were between courses. I had no plate at my seat (because they whipped it away as soon I had finished eating). We were at one of the last tables, and they had just starting calling tables up for dessert. So I thought it would be a good time to have a cigarette. I should note that I had left my purse at the table because I keep everything important in my coat. When I got back my table had just started lining up to get dessert. So I lined up as well and got my coffee and cake only to return to the table and discover that I had nothing to eat the cake with or any spoon to stir my coffee with. They also removed both my wine and water glass.
It wouldn't have upset so much if my purse had not been in plain view at my seat. Also they didn't ask anyone if I had left.

When I was an MS (mess management specialist) in the Navy, crossed utensils meant the officer was finished with their meal and wanted the plate removed. This is what we were taught, militarily. I do not know if Emily Post agrees with this or not.

They would place the fork and knife side by side, on the plate, to indicate they wanted a second (or third) helping. Pending the Captains approval of course, lol.
