  • Goodbye to you

Earlier in the day I had noticed a man wearing a red shirt with his wife asking my co-worker if we cashed cashier's checks. No we do not nor have we ever. Not even the last owners who owned us took them. Even though he argued that they did but my co-worker who has been there seven years told him NO.

Anyway, it was a failry slow day and this same man comes back into my window. Keep in mind I wasn't the one who dealt with him or even talked to him earlier.

    Me: May I help you?

SC: I may have talked to you earlier but you won't do these will you?

(I guess he thought different cashier, different outcome?)

I looked down at what he had and it was the cashier's check.

    Me: unfortunately not, sir.

SC: Well then your boss can just shove it up his ass!

He bellowed some other crap for awhile but I just stood there calmly and stared at him.

SC: I hope you know you just lost a customer.

Me: (The whole time I have a big smile and being sickeningly sweet) Okay.

He got real mad that I didn't care whether or not he stayed.

SC: This place sucks! You people can all shove it up your ass! I've been coming here for years!

Me *thinking* : funny we haven't been open for years...

He finally moved to the side a little bit and in a very clear, loud sickenly sweet voice I said: Have a great day!

And then as he stared me down for a few more minutes I began to ignore him and help the customer behind him.

Now, I wouldn't be posting this if that were the end... Never is.

So, I went into the back and told my supervisor about what happened because I was worried he would come back and cause more trouble.

My supervisor is the most awesomest person ever when there is a jerk around. He has low tolerance for jerks.

So SV goes and calls security and gives a description from me.

Low and behold the same guy comes back to yell some more obscenities about our casino and guess who gets escorted out? Ha ha

One time I had a lady come through my line at the grocery store and try to pay me with her child support check. It was made out to her and she wanted to pay with it and then got mad at me when I suspended her order and sent her to the service desk. Why would someone think you can pay with something that isn't even made out to the business you are trying to pay?

Actually, a lot of grocery stores where I live allow customers to cash their payroll/government checks at the register nowadays, then apply those funds to their purchase. It's incredibly convenient for the customer, who no longer has to make an extra stop at the service desk to cash the check first... but incredibly irritating to anyone who does not work at such an establishment.

Would you believe that I once had someone try to pay for their gas with a $750 tax refund check? Most SCs just assume that all the retail stores in the world have the same rules and policies, haven't you noticed?.

First store I worked at would do that, last store wouldn't it; there's a bank in the same parking lot that the last store worked with, so cashing a check there wasn't such a big deal, as cashing it at the store would've drained the service desk fast.

The store I worked at allowed payroll check cashing......for a fee, with proper ID. This was quite a while ago too, at least a dozen years.

At our store, you can cash a government check only -no personals- but you have to spend at least 50% of it.
We had to use our own discretion. Our floats are only $175, so if you are spending $500 with your $1000 check at 8 in the morning, I'm going to hate you.

We might do certain government checks if they have a players card and have play on it. We're not a bank and if we think they're not going to spend the money in our casino, we say no.

We just don't do cashier's checks. We'd have to verify the funds and that would be a long process.

And if they want to cash a payroll check the issuer of the check has to have an account with us. We're very picky.

Though being so picky we still have like over 150,000 dollars in returned checks. Go figure.

My old store would cash personal and payroll checks, but not tax refunds. Never understood that one. I would think those would be the least likely to bounce.
