Doesn't Minnesota get a cut too?
No. No States are getting cuts. We're just renaming Canada. Besides, don't enough Americans already think of Minnesotans as almost Canadian anyway? Why add to it?

Now, call me crazy, but I thought there were/are 7 principalities in Canada? So, we've divided Canada up into bigger portions? WTF?
Why yes. Yes we are. But there are actually 13* Canadian principalities, if I recall correctly, not 7. But we shall make them only 3 now. Why do we need more than that? Don't we have enough bureaucracy already in the U.S.?

*(Going to try to name them from memory here: British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Alberta, Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Yukon, Northwest, Territories, and Gravekeeper's favororite, Nunavut. Not bad for an American idiot that has never set food in Canada, eh? And for the record, I remembered 12 of the 13 without looking anything up....for some reason I was drawing a blank on Newfoundland.)

West Vermont? I thought it'd be West New Hampshire, so they can have an early say in the primary process!

Bit of trivia - do you know how your Executive Mansion got the name "White House"? From when it was repainted to cover up the burn marks after you tried to annex us back in 1812. Our boys got to Washington, yours never reached Ottawa.
Actually, to be accurate, the BRITISH burned the White House in 1814, not the Canadians. And yes, I was well aware of that bit of trivia. Unlike most Americans, I am not completely ignorant of our history.

Canada is divided up into 10 PROVINCES and 3 TERRITORIES. Yeah I don't know why they didn't all call them one or the other, but that's Canada for you.

If I had a caller who had gone way over minutes and didn't really have a habit of doing so and had a good history and mentioned he or she was a cop, I'd cut them a break.

Pentagon lady from my initial post was not nice and had been credited more than once before for the same issue she was looking for credit again.

It's a lot more about attitude than where you work.

Probably the same reason we had territories and states for a long time. It's hard for even Canadians to want to live up near the north pole, so there's not a lot of human population up there-- not enough to call it a province.

Yes, our ten provinces are: British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, Newfoundland, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. Our three territories are the Yukon Territory, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut.

We actually have a song about burning the White House. It's called 'The War of 1812' by a popular satire band here, The Arrogant Worms. The refrain goes something like this:

And the White House burned, burned, burned, and we're the ones who did it!
It burned, burned, burned, while the president ran and cried.
It burned, burned, burned and things were very historical, and the Americans ran and cried like a bunch of little babies, "wah wah wah", in the war of 1812!"

I don't know how historically accurate that is, but it's definitely a nice thought.

In the UK this is seen as corruption, as such you will be fired for it.
Why corruption? I was under the impression that cops had a fair bit of leeway in dealing with citizens in certain situations. Traffic tickets are the most obvious example: when I get pulled over a cop can decide to ticket me or warn me depending on the circumstances. If that cop remembers me favorably, and cuts me a break - within the confines of the law - there's nothing wrong with that.

It was your Lords and Masters, the British, that did the deed. And really, who'd want to waste their time marching allllll the way up to Ottawa anyway?

Because they are allowing their previous dealings with an individual to cloud their judgement. Here's an example

Traffic officer sees you going 5mph over the limit, pulls you and warns you, fine.

If the same officer sees you doing the same but is having a bad day, and initially decides on giving you fine, points etc then decides because you have done someting nice for them they will let you off its no different to taking a bung.

I had to give a parking ticket to one of the constabulary trainers a couple of weeks ago, I couldn't let them off because I knew them as I wouldn't have done it if I didn't know them. That way I am always seen to be impartial to all and my honesty is never under suspicion.
A PSA, if I may, as well as another.

*dingdingding* We have a winner! And what's more, they don't even have the same style of governance. The territories don't have premiers or MLAs even, if I recall correctly. They also are affected by different formulae regarding transfer payments and such. I also believe they don't get much say in meetings with the Feds.

Don't worry, we draw a blank on Newfoundland up here too. It's a mental defense mechanism. ^^

As for your annexation silliness, the reverse is more likely these days... ;P

I go out of my way to do nice things for the cops in the area of my store. Part of that is my natural ability to suck up just kinda taking over, but part of it is in recognition that I live in the most dangerous city in the US (here's to you St Louis).

I figure an extra (manager-approved, of course) discount never hurts. Our DM is okay with it as well.

There' ssomething to be said for not having to pay any kind of tickets in certain munipalities. We've also had some officers drop off pizzas for us.
I know things have gone downhill since I left St. Louis 15 years or so ago but I did not think they were THAT bad. I know my old neighborhood went white trash with a few drive bys and drug dealers but I know I can still walk around the block and feel somewhat safe (yeah maybe only during the day but.... )
I'm lost without a paddle and headed up SH*T creek.

Whie the Arrogant Worms are indeed a very good satire band, and have many classic songs, this song isn't theirs. It's actually by a different band called Three Dead Trolls in a Baggie, who also aren't bad.

While technically it was the British, it was actually the Canadian troops, which were just considered part of Britain at that time. It was before we became independant of Britain (which, btw, we were able to do without killing people and throwing away a lot of damn good tea. All we had to do was say please. Did you guys ever think of that?), so while it was technically the UK, we can take credit.

and now, to contribute to the actual topic of the thread - I've never had a problem with cops at my store. Even the ones who come in in uniform, etc, never even try to get special treatment. Same with military personnel, etc.
