I had this teenage girl come up to my till today with a load of sweets. She handed me a debit card, which was declined; so she kept asking me to put certain amounts on it to see if she could get most of it on the card; I put in first £5, then another pound, then another... right up to about £10. There was £5 left to pay... so she hands me a £20 note. *head desk* Why didn't she give me the note in the first place rather than have me waste my time with her stupid card and hold the whole queue up?!

Because her time is infinetly more important than everyone else in the shop.

    Or something

I don't get it, why are the rules of shopping not taught anymore, where did our moral standards and society based on respect for others go?

That's like when a SC wants to use a large bill for a small purchase (someone tried to pull a $100 for a $3 purchase for me once), when a peek inside their wallet shows that they have much smaller bills. I waited around for about ten minutes once while my manager was trying to scrounge up some change for me when the customer whipped out a $10 she had all along.

Because she wanted Mummy and Daddy to pay for as much of it as possible so she didn't have to spend her cash that Mummy and Daddy probably gave her in the first place.

She wanted to charge it right down to the last penny, er. . .uh . . . pence?

Last night I had a woman do a similar thing to me. Card was declined for $30 so she asked me to try $20 on the card. Then we tried $15. Then $10. Then she gave up and finally handed over $30 in cash, and admitted that her husband was away on business and must have used the card a lot. OMG! She was at least my mother's age, mid-40s, too.

Now now, lets be honest. That society never existed. Sure there were different social constructs that might be considered more polite than today's (also seregation) but human nature was the same back then as it is today.

Quite possibly, but even when I was a child (that is I'm only 24) people were a lot moer polite than now, people were less selfish, its only been in the last ten years or so that people have become more egocentric.

Jester, I just noticed that if Crazylegs's nickname/abbreviation is CL, then mine is BS

Back on topic, I used to get a lot of fun transactions when I worked at a University Bookstore. Charges on the student card rang up as either "textbook" or "general merchandise". Many students asked if their parents would know what they bought, since guess who's paying the bill How parents could be convinced that daily meals of gummi worms and also purchases of multiple sweatshirts/t-shirts were actually pencils and notebooks for school, I will never understand.

There were a couple students who bought $5-$10 of candy EACH DAY. Blech. Even funnier were the ones who would charge just a bluebook or a pencil (something like 25 cents). The best was the guy who wanted to buy a 5 cent envelope and he only had 3 cents. He asked if I could spot the other 2 and I told him "Nope". Hey, two cents I can spot someone, but not when it is half the product cost.

                      Oh goodness, the memories!

Fridays at the gas station were the worst! It got so bad that my manager made sure we had a spare bag of $200 worth of extra fives and tens because of idiot customers trying to break their $100s and $50s for extremely small purchases. The most common perpetrators were mechanics, construction workers, or street department type workers. People that either get paid in all cash "under the table" if you get my drift or they cashed their checks early that morning.

Not like I was spying or anything, but when customers like that were only buying $12 worth of ciggs and beer and were sifting through their money in their wallet, I'd see 10s and even 20s among their hundreds and hundreds of dollars in 100s and 50s.

If I ever turn to a life of crime or pick pocketing, I know who to go for.
